Personally I can see Varan and maybe Rodan showing up in sequel because they are pretty down to-earth style monsters, not super powered super kaiju. Maybe a few new kaiju that are mutant animals too. I could see the second film having MUTO (or what's left of them) having a private island that they study kaiju they collected from regions of the world: Varan (and you can make a joke of an employee freaking out and comparing it to Godzilla and someone saying, "Who could confuse a mutant iguana that runs around and eats fish for Godzilla?", a pair of Rodans and their chicks, maybe some new kaiju like a mutant manta ray or crab, and maybe one super mutant like maybe Titanosaurus or Biollante. Or something entirely new like that fan-made hoax kaiju called "The Grove" that floated around for like a day.

That's because by the time the Dark Knight Rises was released fans already got to see updated versions of both Catwoman, but more importantly the Joker. There were people who were disappointed that DKR didn't have the Penguin or the Riddler.

My point is, in terms of popularity/exposure: King Ghidorah, Mothra and Mechagodzilla would be considered Tier 1 monsters. Monsters like Gigan, Anguirus, Rodan are more a long the lines of fan favorite, but don't nearly have the same level of exposure as Tier 1.

Now I'm not saying that there has to be a Mechagodzilla by the 3rd film. However once you get to the 4th, or 5th and you still haven't seen one? Yeah, say I 'need to lighten up' but if they are clearly omitting something that significant about the franchise I am going to be upset.

Again, I'm coming back to my Venom comment again. I'm not saying that these movies can't be good while also excluding Mechagodzilla. I am saying that when Venom was in Spider Man 3, a lot of people were excited for the film simply because they were finally going to see Venom brought to life on the big screen. Mechagodzilla would be a similar position.

The same thing is happening here. If the tone of this franchise stays 'believability' that's one thing. If they start adding more fantastic elements, especially if they go down a route of adding in monsters like Gigan, I will have issue. I also don't think that a 3 headed space dragon is any more believable a robot Godzilla, especially if you are going to alien route as explanation. Mechagodzilla was originally a space monster just the same.

I agree, if they are going to use original monsters this doesn't matter. If they start using other monsters you are going to get into the 'playing' favorites game a lot of people are going to be upset no matter what the choice is.

The one thing I wish they would do, which so far it appears that they are not doing, is design the original monsters in a more classic style. Pacific Rim did this great: design choices by GDT directed people to make sure a human shape could fit into all of the kaiju designs. So far what we know about the MUTOs make it sound like these monsters have more design elements from Star Ship Troopers than Meganulans.

No more Mecha-Godzilla, no more Mothra, no more King Ghidorah. There's only one kaiju that lives up to the tone set in Edwards picture for a sequel. HEDORAH!

Starting in 1992, we've had Mothra crammed down our throats either in Godzilla movies, or in her own trilogy from '96 to '98. No more Mothra. If we're going the MUTO insect mutations route, a Megalon or Gigan type of monster in future sequels would make my day. :D

I would be for Hedorah and Rodan making appearances. Rodan definitely tier one in my opinion.
Hedorah has so many possibilities.
Gojiraknight the thin lower jaw gives me the Jaws impression. Looks like a shark when it thrusts out its jaws to bite.

That fan sculpt looks nice. I would like to see bigger spines though. Fan of the 90s spines.

And here I though we were going to be riffing on Banno, silly me.

But yeah a "real" Hedora would be terrifying. I mean what happened in the original was pretty freaky as well (the sluge covered kitten, the gamblers' fate, mutilated faces fading into skeletons etc). I'd dare say if done in this run, a new Hedora could push it to an R rating in a manner I wouldn't mind.

Hedorah, Varan, Kumonga, and Rodan can work. King Ghidorah would also be a big one up there too. But alot of new kaiju would be welcomed.
