I don't know that there's anything that drastic here, and all of my complaints are minor.

PLUS, I feel like I'm going to feel a lot fonder of it once I see the film proper.
I don't feel like there's ever THAT much of a need for change, and this design isn't really THAT different, I mean it's more classic Goji than Mire-Goji was honestly.

I don't dig the feet and the short snout (as always), but otherwise it's a fine design.

^^ agree with XvGojira's post. While I am also fond of Biogoji (well actually the first 3 hesei series film designs) Godzilla's design changes all the time, and unless someone is making a sequel to Destroyah I would not expect to see that design again. I enjoy seeing variations. And really like the fact that the close ups on the face have given fans a G85 vibe, which was one of the more epic and scary Godzilla designs. I think the design will be fitting for the film. G85's design really fit the feel of that film. Not saying Biogoji couldn't have, but I feel G85 firing a nuclear pulse and doing battle with Biollante would look kind of odd. Biogoji's design really fit that film well.

I prefer what Ive seen of the new design over the millennium and most of the showa designs, and the super fat bulk of the mid heisei series. Looking forward to seeing him in action, and since its CG its easy enough for them to get the feet right I would think in post production. I'd imagine the feet will be done in a way to make it obvious its not a man in a suit since they can do things that would be difficult if confined to having someones feet fit there though I don't expect him to be run like a T-Rex in the upcoming Jurassic World.

Speaking of which it looks like the summer blockbuster schedule is about set: http://screenrant.com/dawn-planet-apes- ... furious-7/
Figure in most countries these 4 films will be Godzilla's main competition. Spidey 2, X-Men DOFT, Dawn of POA, and Guardians of the Galaxy (unless FF7 reemerges in July- its a very popular series in Japan [with wacky names like FF5 Megamax or FF6 Euromission] and G14 comes out 7-25 there), with only the first 2 being in the ballpark of its theatrical run stateside. But if it emerges as the strongest contender come June as the dust settles, best case it probably has a good 5-6 weeks before Dawn takes over.

I just think it's bullcrap to insinuate that just because you don't like the design, Legendary somehow wasted their money or something. That doesn't really make a lot of sense to me at all. If the effects in this film are flawless, but you just don't like the design, then Legendary wasted their money? Can either of you try rationalizing that?

Look, the design I think is great, AND simply what I view as another variation on Godzilla's design journey. I loved Bio-Goji, and in concept thought the millennium suits were good but too stiff and plastic lookingZ. GMK fo me, failed from below the head....turkey neck, pot belly....G84 had some good stuff but sometimes had a derp look to it.

I could go on, but Legendgoji had a different hurdle to cross...and think about this: they knew it had to be more upright, tail dragger because Dino history or not, he is mosly upright. That said I'd imagine modelers had to figure out I how he moved and made adjustments so that he looked real when moving. As I've stated, look at all the massive Dino's, they had elephant like feet to best support their mass and I think they struck a balance for performance sake. Now, they also had to avoid the realistic legs GINO had....because fans would be pissed and they would look odd.

Besides, most views will be obscured by dust, debris, etc. so let's just agree that this is at least worthy of Godzilla and let's see how it works in action, shall we?

Still kinda crazy that the design we're getting is a far more traditional Godzilla than all the fan designs we've been seeing for the last three years.

I really love the concept Edwards and Co. had behind their design: this is the real animal that the Toho's suits are modeled after. It's a real clever way of thinking about it, and I can only imagine what that prompt meant to all the designers who worked on Godzilla (I hope the Art of book will contain the various, potential Godzillas).

I LOVE the design, the feet don't bother me one bit. Is that a MUTOS I spot in one of the pictures!?

This was my only real point of centention regarding the feet design, too. If he's based off of a bipedal creature, the feet should look more like a T-Rex, not a four-legged behemoth like a Diplodocus. But whatever. How he moves and his personality are 100 times more important to me than what his toes look like. And I really could care less about the gills, as long as they're not HUGE and FLAPPING, like the Creature From The Black Lagoon. LOL! It does sort of makes sense, especially if they're going to make a plot point out of it. I mean heck, Tsuburaya had them slap ears on the suit for the 1st film at the 11th hour because he realized that Godzilla was supposed to "hear" the bells in the tower before he knocked it over but he didn't have any visible ears, despite the fact that most real dinos didn't either.

Count me as one who thinks the overall design is fine, but not my favorite. It's clearly and instantly recognizable as Godzilla, which is great. Like most, the one thing that really bugs me is the feet. I think the gills are interesting and see them much like the ears that seem to come and go: a small feature that shows up on some versions because they serve a plot point. The face is growing on me. It looks a lot like an updated '84 face with that heavy brow line. And the '84 is one of my all time favorites. I would prefer the skin had more texture, something closer to the classic, but I don't hate what we've got here so it's not a big deal.

Bent the feet are a tough one. I get what they're doing with designing something that would more likely be able to actually support the weight but I think they went just a step too far. The more I look at that toy or model or whatever, the more I think changing one toe would fix it. That outermost toe that is so much smaller and curved in to the others just looks odd and out of place. If it was roughly the same size and orientation as the other two main toes it would be perfect. It would be a nice blend of the stubby, elephantine Ike foot that really large dinosaurs had to support so much weight while also retaining enough of the theropod-like foot shape with three clearly defined forward facing toes along with the classic inner dew claw so many Godzilla's have had over the years.
