Need as in, do we need to see it for the story to work? No. Get it out of the GD movie.

And how does the "it's a LOTR prequel" hold-up if the movies are wildly different in tone? "Hey, I'm gonna make a prequel to Alien targeted towards kids. The Xenomorph is gonna do the cha-cha."

Just watched The Man Who Came to Dinner (1942) - quite a lot of fun, great script, lots of great performers although Woolley doesn't give many of them much of a chance to shine.

Well. Agree to disagree I guess. I liked the lotr movies quite a bit. I liked the Hobbit book more than the lotr books. I loathe Peter Jackson's Hobbit.

Except The Hobbit is good, you just don't want to enjoy it because it isn't the book, mixes in stuff from the appendices, and is longer than you want it to be.

BTW, there was nothing wrong with King Kong. Yes it is long. Yes it is an unnecessary remake. However, there is nothing wrong with it from a cinematic stand point.

Watched a few movies this weekend:
X-Men First Class - the wife had never seen an X-Men movie, so I started her off with the best one. She really liked it. I love this movie.

Gremlins - Christmas. Plus, checking out the new Blu-ray. Great flick. Another one that I love.

X-Men - the wife wanted to see more X-Men movies after First Class, so we started at the beginning. She liked it, but right at the end, she goes, "Wait...Magneto's in Xavier's place, right?" and I responded, "No. He's being held by the government or something." To which she replied, "And they just have special plastic prisons lying around? Just in case?" Yeah, it's a pretty huge plothole, but I enjoy the movie for the most part. I especially like that it's one of two X-Men films that actually makes use of the notion that these guys are a TEAM and need to use teamwork to overcome the obstacles put in their way.

Gremlins 2 - To me, this is kinda like Crank 2. Rather than attempting to top its predecessor in objective terms as a film, it tops its predecessor in the sheer number of insane things that happen. It's wilder, funnier, and almost defies you to ATTEMPT to evaluate it. I love this movie. I think I mighta even watched it more as a kid than the first one. I think the first is better, but this one has an undeniable manic energy.

Yeah, don't waste your time discussing King Kong because you will just be wasting your finger energy. It just isn't worth my arguing over.

Let's save that debate for whatever Godzilla movie I watch next or Pacific Rim.

There are moments in The Hobbit and Kong where it just felt far too over the top.
The Dino stampede, pit scene, and escape scene (Hobbit) all come to mind. That said, I still like them both.

A Christmas Carol (1951)

What is there to say about this that hasn't already by said? Charles Dickens, Alastair Sim, lovely/creepy black and white. It isn't Christmas until supernatural beings bring mortals nightmarish visions! Merry Christmas!

Iron Man - I actually enjoyed this more than I had any other time I'd seen this movie. For some reason, it never really clicked with me any of the other times I saw it that what I had perceived as Tony's immediate weakened state as soon as the reactor is unplugged from his chest is actually more aptly attributed to the effects of the paralysis he'd been hit with. That was one of my major complaints with the movie and I feel like it's been kinda wiped away. I still think Avengers and The Incredible Hulk are definitely better, but now I'm thinking I might prefer this to Iron Man 3...the reveal of Obediah as the bad guy in this movie feels a little less cheap than the reveal that Ben Kingsley is just an actor, and holds up better to repeated viewings.

A Christmas Carol (1984)

This is another good one, very much in the spirit of the '51 version (the director here was, as a younger man, the editor of the earlier film), but I don't think quite as good - maybe because George C. Scott, despite being great, seems to be having too much fun being mean and is still a bit too scary when he's become nice.
