TALKBACK #12: Godzilla vs. Gigan

And I don't understand why you say it is pointless to argue with me. I clearly present why I like something or why I do not. You just have this habit of getting all offensive on me because I disagree with you.

I watch movies for their entertainment value. If I am entertained, the movie worked for me. Destoroyah does that. Hedorah does not. I don't go in expecting A Clockwork Orange, Alien, The Empire Strikes Back, The Shawshank Redemption, or even the original Godzilla with every movie, I just want to enjoy whatever time I spent watching the movie. I don't give two craps about who the director is. If an effect is lazy or not. If the story works when interrogated. If I am entertained, I am happy. If I am happy, I will praise the movie. If I am not entertained, then I am not happy, and I will talk negatively about the movie. If you can't respect my opinion, how can you expect me to respect yours?

Anyone notice Anguirus doesn't open his mouth until midway through the final battle? Throughout the rest of the film his mouth stays closed, even when his roar is heard. This really annoyed me when I watched it for the first time since I was a kid. This is definitely a really enjoyable film, despite its faults.

Started watching this last night. Haven't seen it since 1999.

I don't dispute that the movie had a lot of fun ideas, I just wonder about the overall tone. It's a Godzilla movie that manages to be lighter than a Hattori Hanpei-centric episode of Kikaida.

I'm watching a really good subbed print and Gigan's colour is still hard to make out in some scenes. My toy Gigan was dark blue, he's coming across almost green in this film.

It seems like a lower budget entry in the series, almost a send-up. It also uses the "Monster Island" concept which for me only ever worked in "Godzilla's Revenge". I don't like that Monster Island thing at all.

There was never to be another PERFECT Godzilla movie after 1964's "Mothra vs. Godzilla".

The karate-chopping girl looks like a Japanese Diana Rigg.
