So I beat Arkahm City the other day, still doing a few side missions. I still like Asylum better. The idea behind the story is great but the execution wasn't the greatest. Batman is just pinballing from villain to villain until the face off with the Joker. The huge amount of villain in City made them wasted potential. Two-face had less screen time than in The Dark Knight. The Catwoman game play felt like it was there just to tack on an Ivy fight and completionist Riddler trophies. And I know most people know the Joker, but if Ras Al Ghul is in the game, he should have been the true "villain". The villains in Asylum made sense and had enough weight to them to not be glorified cameos. And there wasn't enough varity in the city. Other than the industrial area/Joker's place I could only tell who's part of the city I was in by looking at the masks or attire of the thugs I beat up.
And all the gadgets in Asylum seemed to be more useful. In City you get a new gadget use it to get past one section or so, and then it's just a tool to get trophies you couldn't get before. In Asylum it worked much like upgrades in Metroidvania games, accessing and traversing new areas, short cuts to old areas. But being an open world diminishes those aspects.
Its definitely not a bad game, it's feels great to glide about the city and bounce around between thugs fist first. But I preferred the first more, like a half a start difference between the two.
Using some vouchers I picked up Civ V gold and some DLC for less than forty bucks. We played on the easiest setting because neither of us are really strategy game players but the night went like "It's only 10pm, we could start a game and see how it is." .... "Is it really 5am already?"
God what a fun time sink.
