I finally got around to watching the movie. It was a better adaptation than I expected. The script does a good job of streamlining the novel down for a two hour movie, and it's well paced. The battle room and command school scenes are all impressively executed, bolstered by a solid (if not terribly original) score from Steve Jablonsky. The younger actors give the strongest performances, with Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley being rather underwhelming. It's disappointing to see how quickly this movie seems to have been forgotten, as it's one of the better 2013 releases.

If you haven't read the book, avoid the trailers before watching the movie, as they follow the typical Hollywood habit of giving away the entire story.

I too watched this recently and I agree. It was actually pretty good. I loved the book when I read it several years ago and I was skeptical as to how well it could ever translate to the silver screen, but I was pleasantly surprised. They actually did a very nice job adapting the novel as Dai mentions.

I'm actually a little sad that I waited to see this on home video. There were numerous shots that would've been really spectacular on a huge screen.
