...meh.
At some point with this movie, you have to make a decision: "I'm either going to keep track of all the things that don't make sense, are under-explained, are brought up as plot points and dropped and forgotten about just as quickly, and are poorly tackled, or I'm just gonna throw up my arms, stop caring, and enjoy the ride"
I chose the latter, but JUST BARELY. It's JUST BARELY fun enough to be ok. The bad and the good roughly weigh equal...
The Bad:
-The Aether is one of the biggest MacGuffins I think I've ever seen in a film. Seriously...what does it do? How is it used? Why is it considered a "stone" if it's an amorphous cloud of black redness? Why does Thor think he can destroy it? How is it that it's so ridiculously easy for Malekith to take it from Jane? Why can't someone just take it from Malekith the same way? Do they harvest it from his corpse at the end before giving it to The Collector?
-What's the deal with the uber-elf guy? How is he created? Why does he need to "die" to be created? If he's still so ridiculously obedient to the cause, why doesn't Malekith create more of them? Why doesn't Malekith do this to himself? I mean, this thing slaps Mjolnir aside like it's nothing, even HULK couldn't do that! Wouldn't it be nice to have more than one?
-What's the deal with all the mortal/immortal talk? Odin and Loki specifically state in the beginning of the film that they aren't IMMORTAL, that their life-span is something to the tune of 5000 years....but then Odin keeps telling Thor that he can't be with Jane because she's mortal...
-Why does Malekith's face change over the course of the film?
-Why does Selvig take off his pants and act like a maniac?
-Why does a coat hook support Mjolnir?
The Good:
-Loki.
-Scenes with Loki and Thor bantering back and forth.
-A mostly satisfactory climax (kinda rare for these Marvel films).
-Decent pacing.
-Subverted some of my expectations (ie who lived, died...Loki's "betrayal" of Thor...)
-Anthony Hopkins seems a little more into it this time out.
-Loki.
-Tom Hiddleston as Loki.
-Loki's tricks.
-And of course, Loki.
