While I don't share buykaiju's same enthusiasm for the movie, I must say I typically watch it with a different eye than I think most people do. It makes for a really good satire of the genre if I watch it with the idea that it was made with such intent. I'm sure this would piss off even more people, but I've found it to be a more enjoyable experience if it's taken even less serious than the movie itself makes it out to be.

Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

Bumping this thread, as I'm contemplating watching this again.

For some reason I've had a small desire to re-watch it. It hasn't aged well with me so far; the last time I watched it all the way through (at least four years ago or more) I remember being miserably bored. It's funny, looking back, how much I stepped up to plate for Final Wars (I've been reading the old review thread from when it first came out). Deep down, I had always wanted a balls-to-the-wall action Godzilla movie with crazy stunts... and I think I was so eager for it that I was willing to be enthusiastic for the parts where Final Wars managed to shine.

So anyway, tonight, I may attempt to watch it. I have a little extra time tonight, and while I have some freelance work to accomplish, once that's done I can sit down leisurely and watch. I've been teetering back and forth on whether or not to do it, but today.... (Idris Elba voice here) today I shall take the dive once again.

If for nothing else, to give my mind an opportunity to form a critique that's not tinted by first-time enthusiasm or tainted by the movie's bad reputation over time.

Wish me luck.

I've already spoken at length in this thread about why I hate this movie's parody-like nature.

The visceral hatred for this movie makes me love it all the more. I mean, in a vacuum, I'd probably find it a stupid, fun, film. But through the lens of pure, unadulterated hatred that literally turns people's urine streams a slightly scary shade of orange/brown, I love this thing and find it hilarious just how much people hate it and let it get to them (which I imagine is what the world is doing to me with The Hobbit...nobody could like that pile of crap, they just think they do because I hate it more than I hate Roland Emmerich)

So much has been said already about this movie over the years that there's almost nothing left to say without repeating thy selves. That said, to me, the only good thing to come out of this movie was the way that Gigan was portrayed. I was glad they expanded his character from what we saw in Vs. Gigan and Vs. Megalon.

All these years later I still love the movie. Every time I watch it I just so thoroughly enjoy it, and it was easily the most satisfying of the Millennium movies for me. It's a shame that it still seems to inspire so much hatred among people, but guess being the last movie for nearly a decade, not like there was much else to "lessen" the impact it had on some people.

I guess the fiftieth anniversary was really not the time to do something like that, but I just love the fact that it felt more different and "experimental" like we were seemingly promised before Godzilla 2000 came out. I do enjoy all the Millennium movies, but none of them truly felt like bringing in new blood to shake up the franchise as this would have, had it come out first instead of six movies in.

I'm not the world's biggest GMK fan...but that particular film certainly shakes things up and brings some new blood and a different take to the franchise.

...and I think it was, and remains ridiculous that people built up the notion of it being an anniversary film in their heads so much.

I understand and remember the hype for it as the 50th anniversary film. Nowadays, though, I find it easy to disregard that context when I watch it. It's just a movie I have fun with, flawed as it is. I think I've said before that its kinetic sense of energy really clicks with me. It's this weird pastiche of kaiju and Hollywood sci-fi, but the results are strangely interesting to me. I rank it in third place among the Millennium films, behind G2K and GMK.
