My set never had any ghosting on it. When did you start noticing ghosting Silver Kamen?

I'm going to have to investigate this ghosting a little more closely. I noticed on my LCD/LED HDTV that I had to turn the tru-motion completely off because the motion smoothing looked abnormal. I'm not talking the soap opera effect either, this was something new that I had never seen before. I also noticed that with the smoothing off, that some sweeping camera motions would tend to stutter, which I think is what was throwing the smoothing software for a loop. I'm going to have to look more closely at some paused frames during those moments now.

The jerky motion you're seeing during camera pans is most likely judder. It is native to the source material. Whether is was originally shot on film at 24fps or video at something faster (being Japanese, had it been shot on video it would likely be NTSC and 30fps). At either frame rate, when the camera pans there will be herky jerky judder. The speed at which the camera pans can either reduce or worsen the effect and there often seems to be a "sweet spot" of camera panning speed that makes judder the absolute worst.

I see it not only on pans but also on scenes where people are running or moving quickly even though the camera is stationary. I'm presuming it's the same root cause... a sample rate thing. If you pause it you can clearly see double-image frames. I also notice it very badly on the "Return of Ultraman" Malaysian DVD thread, and posted several screencaps there. Most people in that thread said that the picture looked fine to them... to me it's pretty much unwatchable (worse than Ultra Q).

Because it's very clear double-imaging I had presumed that it was because of poorly-generated intermediate frames due to a frame rate conversion at some point. Undersampling when first filmed seems like it would cause jerkiness but not double-imaging, IMO.

Those "double frames" you're talking about, Mysterio, are an interlacing problem where the even and odd fields are getting out of sync and is completely different from judder.

I don't have the set myself (yet), but can anyone who does confirm whether it really is an interlacing problem or just judder?

The Return of Ultraman Malaysian set is to me much worse than the Ultra Q set, but several people in the other thread didn't seem to mind it or notice it at all... :? I couldn't even finish the first episode of that one.

My wife is getting the set as a Christmas gift to me. Just got me wondering if there's been any news if Shout! wants to aquire some more Ultraman shows or anything in the kaiju/toku department? Would be sweet if they would start releasing some of the newer series' as well. I know aquiring Ultraman can be tricky.... but was just curious.

At least we got the classic trinity of shows, though. Those were the main ones I was interested in seeing.

I actually haven't got Ultra Q yet. I'm getting it for Christmas - pretty excited!

I have gotten this set back on August. While this may not look as nice as the Tsuburaya home releases picture quality, I guess the fact that we're getting this show at all is worth celebrating.
