I just don't think they look very good. Kind of a distracting detail. But this is going on one picture, possibly not a final design. As long as the movie doesn't make a big point of going, "Look, we gave him gills! check out the gills! Totally better than those non-gill designs from Japan! They didn't make sense!" then I'm not gonna fuss over it much.

Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

Keep Godzilla dinosaur, and don't go down some weird fish-monster (webbed feet and hands, really?). Seems like a reasonable expectation consider 50+ years of history and multiple confirmations that Godzilla is a dinosaur. There were lots of aquatic reptiles in dinosaur times that did not have gills. Adding them is change for the sake of change, especially because that added detail was not necessary in any other film.

Gills wouldn't add anything to the design, and the negatives outweigh any cool factor of the addition.

^I don't find them distracting at all... I mean, they're really not that noticeable. I'm sure all of us just thought they were skin texture until scrutinizing the pic for at least a little while.

Assuming they are gills I think the genius part about the addition as that I don't think they're that noticeable. They don't stick out from the overall shape or form and aren't distracting. Count me as one of those who didn't notice the detail until someone else pointed it out. I think it's a small, clever little addition on the classic design. Nothing to lose minds over as long as it isn't distracting. (And I don't think it is.)

Godzillasaurus clearly showed that Godzilla does in fact from from a DINOSAUR (not to mention the original inspirations for his design).

And my point is, as a fictional creature capable of impossible feats, there's no reason to add gills for realism sake. However, going and adding something like gills would take him from being a fictional dinosaur, and instead turning him into something like a mutated fish, frog, etc., basically any number of gilled creatures.

^Well, we've reached an impasse here: I think gills are a perfectly fine addition to Godzilla (a neat idea, as a matter of fact), while the entire concept rubs you the wrong way.

We could argue 'till the cows come home, but since they're both mere opinions there's not much point.

Can we just agree that the atomic breath should be blue?

WHAT people are justifying the gills as added believability? I just think they LOOK cool.

And all this dinosaur stuff is bullsh*t. The people saying the gills make him not a dinosaur anymore are the same people saying he HAD to stand upright because he's NOT a dinosaur.

Gills, not gills. As long as he wades through buildings like a muthertrucking boss, I'm happy.

Watch it turns out they aren't gills, ha. :P Seriously though, if they are, I say cool. It's a neat addition that separates this design from the others. But still keeps the over all look traditional. Whatever their reasoning, it's cool.

At the risk of mini-modding, may I point out that we have an ignore feature in this new forum software? User Control Panel, check it out.

I'm going to resign myself to waiting for official word on the whole gills thing. I think they look very much like gills, and I think that's a justifiable and cool design choice if they truly are, but I'm not sure we know enough about this movie's approach to the Godzilla character. I mean that in terms of his origins. I mean, he's obviously going to be a mutated creature, but I don't know if they're going to run with the G54 explanation or if they'll try something else. Maybe we'll hear something about it once Legendary stops trying to delete the pictures. :P

Which goes to show passion can sometimes be an impediment. First it was the feet now it's the (possibility) of gills. Now really, does anyone think that such minor details are going to make that big of a difference? I'm not losing any sleep.

Yes, absolutely. Stubby feet, gills, smooth skin, lack of ears, small teeth and 'overly friendly' eyes are valid criticisms of the design. I would also like to through in in-organic, and small spines into the pot as well. Not everything is sunshine and rainbows about this film. While almost everything about this production has been positive, treating people who don't want to get on the bandwagon like they are idiots or with contempt is not a healthy conversation. I don't understand why it's necessary to point out that my logic is simply "wrong thinking" or that I am being deliberately inconsistent in my criticism in the design choices, or that I'm not getting this 'transitionary' animal (especially considering that Tomoyuki Tanaka, the father of Godzilla was the producer of both Godzilla and Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah).
