in other words, nothing is perfect, so striving or hoping for the perfect design is setting yourself up to be a grumpy gus, private pouts-a-lot, captain cranky, etc.

I dunno...my top three would be:

Godzilla 54
Godzilla 84

and probably my very fave...Godzilla 62.

I really love the design marquettes for the Always 2 Godzilla and G2K Godzlla. That's prob my top 5 designs. The G 14 design is maybe 6 or 7 for me...right after the Godzilla from Godzilla vs. Mothra 92. (The GMK suit might be above it too actually)

For an American Godzilla design to crack my top 10 is astounding. What's most important is that it matches the film it's in. I mean, I'm not a fan of the Toto Gamera from GTB but within the context of the film it's not bad at all really (still wish he had the classic Gamera roar though).

Keep one thing in mind. We are used to Godzilla's with very little change to their facial expressions with the exception of a few movies. This Godzilla will probably go from that face we have already seen to hella pissed. Our opinions are definitely going to change once we see him action. The thing I am most curious about is their take on his heat ray/breath. I don't remember Edwards exact wording about it when asked but he said something on the lines of he didn't want it to stick out like some novelty piece of the movie. Someone with a better memory can help out with that.

Also a little prediction on my end, it looks like his dorsal plates have a blue tint to them. I wonder if that is so when he charges up it is their realistic way of explaining the classical blue plate phenomenon. Maybe his heat ray will be white... O_o Just pullin stuff from my ass.

^I can get behind that opinion on the gills....well, I mean, I CAN'T because I think the gills are really cool, but even if you hate it, it doesn't detract from the actual design and Godzilla-ness of it.

Gills are too fish-like, I hope they are just scales. I know that Godzilla is completely fictional, but it just goes against completely against taxonomy biology and previous Godzilla designs/biology. A reptile cannot have gills as a definition of being a reptile.

I think my biggest gripe with the current design is the relatively smooth skin and lack of ears. The keloid scars from Nagasaki and Hiroshima were cited as a design element for Godzilla, who in his current form, looks more leathery than previous iterations.

I didn't really identify that as an issue at the start until this image was posted on the Godzilla subreddit

The hint of original textuing in that image really increases how much I like the design, but it's not actually case in the final design.

^ I like that picture, Jor.

In regards to the texturing, the stuff we saw in G Encounter looked incredibly detailed to me even if it wasn't the final design. I don't see that as being an issue for the movie.

But as a fictional monster there hasn't been reason to explain WHY he can breathe under water. If it's true, it seems like a pretty pointless addition, and would be the biggest departure of all (which Edwards said was faithful to the original). Godzilla is a sea-monster sure, but I wouldn't want to consider him a derivative of a fish-monster.

I don't know what the big deal is. The gills seem like a fairly logical addition. Pointless? Possibly, but honestly I didn't notice them until somebody pointed them out, and I still kinda have look for them to really notice them. It definitely doesn't make him look like a fish IMO, nor does it make him in danger of becoming the next GINO (obviously). As long as Godzilla's character is done right, I really couldn't care less about it.

Edwards has spoken about a grounded approach to this film so the gills make sense in that context. It doesn't affect the design much and truthfully it could still just be skin texturing anyway. Either way, the more I see the picture the more I like it.

Everyone here seems to forget that Godzilla mutated from a creature that was in an evolutionary transition from a land living to sea living animal. Key words here are EVOLVE and TRANSITION. Gills are not so far fetched when considering a characteristic that was a part of Godzilla's history from the very beginning. I for one don't have a problem with it because it's not a radical departure from Godzilla's basic design or function. If anything, it DOES serve to explain a few things. He is aquatic by nature and because of it should have additional features implicating that fact, including webbed hands and feet for underwater maneuvering. He is still no less a reptile for it and by no means will it confuse the audience regarding HIS gender as was implied in "98.
