I can't think of anything he's done that stick out in my mind, but I also feel like the scores for Zero Dark Thirty, Moonrise Kingdom, and Argo were all fine.

Fine...not bombastic...very subtle...but I'm kind of wanting something John William-sy and loud for Godzilla. Not saying that this guy can't do it, just that it's not a name that popped up on my radar at all.

One interesting thing, looking at the cast and crew...a lot of Oscar-drama caliber talent. Kind of gives this film an interesting vibe.

Well, you might not expect the "Cloverfield" suite from the guy who did the Pixar films, either.

The classic Ifukube music is so distinctive that it'd be nice for at least the classic Godzilla theme to make it in.

Alexandre Desplat is a good composer though. His work for Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows was really good.

Here's a sample I just looked up. I think this guy will do well and again we get another piece that has won or been nominated for an Oscar so he must be pretty good....

This will do. It's not Djawadi or Giacchino, but I'm sure Desplat will turn in something perfectly serviceable. I have nothing else to really say about the news at this point.

I'm actually very excited about this. Desplat is an extremely talented composer who doesn't get enough credit in my opinion. While his name certainly wasn't in the ring in my mind for Godzilla, now that he's been chosen I can see why Legendary and Edwards picked him. It says a lot that their not going for big and loud like Zimmer or Djawadi, but something a bit more subdued and complex. Color me happy.

Could not care less who they choose as long as they use some of Ifukube's themes.

It's as important to Godzilla as the James Bond theme is to those films.
