SO HEY...

This movie wasn't very good.

I'll concede that I got a few chuckles out of it and it had some interesting ideas and for the most part, the performances were good. Moretz is still great as Hit Girl. And Jim Carrey gave a fantastic performance. VERY un-Carrey, also. He was like the Nicolas Cage of this movie... he stole every scene he was in as far as I'm concerned. Aaron Johnson is still good as Kick Ass, but he really has nothing to do in this film, unfortunately.

But this movie was a mess. The plot itself is all over the place, with what seems like a lot of filler material.

My main issue with the first Kick Ass was the tonal inconsistency. You know, how the premise was sold as "what if this really happened" and then the next scene, mobsters are exploding in microwaves and people are flying around in jet packs? Well this movie amplifies that wishy washy inconsistency by like 1000. This movie is WAY more ridiculous than the first film, but unlike the first film, this one actually HAMMERS the audience over the head with monologues about how "This is real life, this isn't a comic book"- one scene is literally a heavy, emotional scene at a FUNERAL, then it goes to people flying around on the tops of cars and stuff... and it ends with something like 50 costumed heroes fighting 50 costumed villains and people falling into giant shark tanks... all while we're supposed to be remembering that "this is real life"- so I can't even take it as a parody of the genre anymore... now its just a total clusterf*ck that doesn't even know what its doing.

Also, JESUS CHRIST THIS HAS THE WORST NARRATION EVER. I don't know if I've seen a more unnecessary or more overly descriptive narration since GIGANTIS THE FIRE MONSTER. There are moments where after a good 20 minutes of NO narration, some bit of narration will come out of left field, and just say what's PLAINLY going on on the screen and go away.

The first Kick Ass was a film that I didn't hate, but I didn't love like everyone else. It was a fun movie that I didn't really need to see more than once. And while this one isn't terrible (it isn't 26% on RT bad), its a MASSIVE step down from the first one. Matthew Vaughn's touch is sorely missing.

And I'd still rather just watch a Hit Girl movie... she's awesome.

It scares me that this director (who you may remember from such classics as CRY WOLF and NEVER BACK DOWN) is going to be handling the next X-Men film.

Oh well, at least it made me want to revisit Super again because I love that movie.

I liked it for what it was. Everything about it seemed lighter compared to the first one-- I'm not necessarily talking about the violence. The climax, emotional and comedic beats, nuances for minor character...etc... It's an enjoyable, typical not-as-good-as-the-first sequel. Nothing to write home about, but not something I'll go back to either.
