I hate to say it, but there's a pretty good reason the genre has plummeted in popularity since the 90s. And its due to a ton of rushed, lackluster films with tiny budgets, short production schedules and a strict adherence to FX methods that are becoming rapidly outdated.

Pacific Rim may have underperformed stateside, but at least its being really well received in foreign markets and through word of mouth. That alone shows me that if something is done right, people will respond to it well. Besides, the people that loved Pacific Rim LOOOVED it, and that includes the non-kaiju fans that saw it. Look up the tons of fan art and tumblr pages and memes dedicated to it. Its on its way to becoming a cult classic.

Dead genre? Hardly.

We have Hollywood giving a mega-budget reboot to the kaiju genre's biggest star. Even if the new Godzilla doesn't do well, that shows that there IS tons of interest in kaiju still. Hollywood doesn't just throw that kind of money behind something for no reason. Whether a film is good or bad, that kind of money doesn't go towards something "just because."

Stop being so melodramatic, guys.

You'd think we wouldn't want to be talking box office, since it's basically been bad news. Instwad, you'd think we'd want to talk stuff like the layered relationship between Mako and Pentecost and all the great little character moments.
