Just started here in Japan yesterday, Aug. 9. Finally!
Saw it then, and again tonight.

Absolutely fantastic! I won't gush too much about it other than to say this: Thank you, Guillermo. Thank you for making THE movie I've been waiting my whole life to see. Thank you.

I thought it had more than sufficient plot and character development to support the Jaeger/Kaiju action. And that action was stunning! Otachi and Gipsy's showdown in downtown Hong Kong was simply amazing. As were all the battles, actually.

Only one criticism, if you can all it that: I wanted to see more. More of the other barely-seen Kaiju and Jaegers, and more of the ones that were featured...that is, more daylight action, and maybe pull the camera back just a tad for a few shots, so we could see more.

I don't know what the box office figures are so far over here, but on both of the nights I saw it, the theater was about half full, which really isn't bad for my local cinema (Sano-shi, Tochigi-ken). I saw the subtitled 2D version, although a dubbed 3D version is also playing here, with twice as many showings per day than the 2D subbed version. I suspected the dubbed 3D version might be getting more traffic, so I asked the staff, and they said yes, that seemed to be the case. Also, they had the NECA figures on sale in the lobby. Only Crimson Typhoon and Knifehead were left.

So yeah, it was a very satisfying movie for me! Very, very happy.

Also, and I haven't seen this mentioned in this thread anywhere, but am I the only one who wants a whole set of those cool glossy black Jaeger and Kaiju maquettes shown during the end credits?

These guys:

Me wants!

Those videos are great. The dude is a fanatic just like us.

Also, when will some critics realize that "Big budget action movie" doesn't automatically = Michael Bay. I mean... there's even more to Michael Bay than that. It just feels like any movie with a lot of action that comes out, SOMEONE has to make the Bay comparison.

In less positive news the critic for the Japan Times (an English language Japanese newspaper for gaijins) paned the film giving it two stars and saying....

[quote]Anyone who thought the old Toho Godzilla movies should have been done with a gazillion-dollar budget, here’s your film. Yet Guillermo del Toro, once hyped as a visionary director for such works as “Pan’s Labyrinth,â€
