So, how about Jumborg Ace? 1973, supposed to be a giant cyborg but still pretty much a mecha and totally live action. - Control with both body movement and brain-waves, by a single pilot though. :D

The pilots melded with the Eva's minds. It looked like some fluid was in the pilot's helmets, like how Eva pilots are in liquid. There was a whole episode of Eva about Asuka and Shinji learning how to work in tandem.

I'm not saying the film doesn't draw from many different mecha series for inspiration,because it does,but people comparjng it tk eva aren't just pulling stuff out of their asses.

I saw Mazingerish stuff and VOTOMSish stuff too,as well as just standard mecha tropes. They even had bloodynoses,albeit without the same connotations as anime bloody noses.
