Was really surprised by this one. Dare I say, of the comic book superhero movies this summer, The Wolverine may take the cake. Mangold really went out of his way to craft a solid movie and one of his better efforts too.

Ultimately, it's just nice to have good X-Men movies again. When The Last Stand and Origins came out, I assumed that was the inevitable path X-Men would go down-- cash grabs with no substance. But First Class and The Wolverine have bounced this franchise back and made me excited for these movies again.

I really should remember to plant tongue firmly in cheek before I write some of this stuff.

I know some people really hate X-men 3. I didn't, didn't love it either, but I perfectly understand why people dislike it because its definitely the weak cash-in movie out of the trilogy. That said, The Wolverine made X-men 3 better. It may have not redeemed it for some, but it took the Jean/Wolverine interaction from that movie and made it matter. I really enjoyed the Jean scenes in this, and thought it was done just right.

Spoiler: The movie implies that Jean might be able to come back.

I'm having a lot of difficulty finding anything in this movie that I disliked or that I think didn't work. It's a great Wolverine story that isn't saturated with mutants. I thought they pulled off the Silver Samurai pretty well, especially with the step-sister's talk about mixing the old with the new. Btw, I really liked the step-sister. Probably my second favorite character in the movie. Mariko was great too.

And that mid-credit scene.....I wasn't before, but now I am absolutely PUMPED for a new X-men movie.
