I TRIED.

I f*cking TRIED so hard to stay optimistic about this. I knew they were just rushing this to get to JLA faster. But this?

Seriously?

Not only did Frank Miller lose his damn mind decades ago, but he's the WRONG person to talk to about Superman.

The Dark Knight Returns is a great book... AMAZING, even. Probably my favorite comic book ever. But taking inspiration from that for a Superman/Batman movie is all wrong, and meeting with Miller about it is all wrong too. Miller's views on Superman are pretty condescending.

And his take on Superman in TDKR is great, but its only great for a satirical look at the character that his being shown through the eyes of an older, more unhinged Batman. Superman is a total tool in that book... which is fine because its A BATMAN STORY.

It is NOT right for the first meeting of Batman and Superman and it is NOT right for a Batman/Superman team up movie. FRANK MILLER DOESN'T EVEN LIKE SUPERMAN... HE'S SAID IT HIMSELF.

And really, I'm sick of the fanboy "Batman vs. Superman" wank about who is better and how Batman is cool and Superman is lame or whatever. Its bullsh*t. These guys are FRIENDS, even if they have very begrudging respect for eachother's methods of dispensing justice. I feel like comics have played up the Batman vs. Superman thing way too much lately and I'd much rather see them teaming up than fighting with eachother.

I should have known this when they said the movie would probably be called "Batman vs Superman" but really... REALLY?!

I think a lot of what's being said about all of this is a bunch of hot air. This movie is still a Man of Steel follow-up, I don't think they would suddenly change the character to a Dark Knight Returns-esque tool out of nowhere. It's been said repeatedly that Superman will have to answer for the destruction he caused in the first film and that's an interesting, vulnerable place to put the character. Also, the Cavill's Kent does not at all resemble the character in Miller's novel. Furthermore, in this universe we're already connected to Superman. We need him as a catalyst to introduce the new Batman. I don't see Snyder throwing away everything he built with the first film for Miller's vision.

My guess is that they're meeting to give him an executive producer credit on his resume and up the PR amongst fans who love The Dark Knight Returns. It's way too early for a rage filled outburst at this stage.

I dunno man, I try to stay positive, but I just don't feel like WB have their head on straight.

They've already said this movie will be inspired by TDKR, and them getting Miller on board in just cements that. And for a re-introduction of Batman and the first meeting with Superman, TDKR is exactly the wrong thing to go to. The fact that they are looking at it close enough to bring Miller in is what raises a major red flag for me.

I feel like consulting someone like John Byrne, Gail Simone, Paul Dini, Scott Snyder, Dennis Jurgens, or hell, I'll even take Grant Morrison... those would be better people to talk to. Its not like Miller would be the only name they could get if they were JUST concerned about raising PR with fans.

My point is that Frank Miller doesn't like Superman and his take on Batman hasn't been remotely good since DKR. Which raises my next point, and that's that Miller shouldn't really be consulting on Batman either.

It just seems like creatively, they're going with the wrong approach right from the get go.

And without Nolan working as the trusted in-between WB and Snyder/Goyer, there will no doubt be more big wig producers from Warner bringing in their ideas of what they think fans want or whatever. That's already showing... Zack Snyder basically saying "Despite how I feel about Superman, I have to go with what Warner wants" isn't exactly a ringing endorsement for his newest film, is it?

Admittedly, it's not the right stuff to say, but they were saying the right stuff beforehand regarding Superman's character.

It's just without any script or any idea of what this movie will really be like, these planning stages of people talking about movies don't mean anything until pre-production hits. And even then plenty is bound to change.

I'll eat my words, so to speak, if we see the same stuff this time next year. As it stands I don't see anything to get disappointed or excited about unless you do or don't like the idea of Batman and Superman in the same movie. I just see a lot of vague comments that don't rub me either way.

EDIT:

On the topic of Nolan, isn't he still onboard as an executive producer? Granted it's not the most time consuming credit and he won't be as close to the movie while working on Interstellar, but would they completely drop a chance to listen to his advice? Hmm.

Is there any chance that DC will implode/liquidate and companies that actually like these characters will buy up the rights?

Can we add Captain Marvel (Shazam!) and Plastic Man to the movie?

... then eliminate the Batman and Superman parts?

Hypothetically, if he took the role, I don't think this is a case of merging the Nolan Batman movies with Man of Steel. It looks to me WB wants to use Bale for Batman the same way Judi Dench was used in the Bond series. Same character, same performer, different universe-- which I don't have an issue with really. I think that would be an okay route to go IF Bale wanted to do it. And that's the point of contingency for me. He clearly doesn't want to, his heart's not in it, so move along. Find someone new.
