Should be opening in Japan very soon. Norman England was just at a press screening. (He liked it a lot BTW and that's saying something cuz Norman hates everything!*)

*kind of joking sarcasm

I was shocked and super happy to see that Norman liked it. Anyone who is friends with him on Facebook knows he really DOES hate EVERYTHING. Its super rare to see him like anything made after like 1990, especially a Hollywood blockbuster.

I'm happy to see that the majority of the big names in the fandom/industry have liked the movie.

So far, Jeff Zornow, Steve Ryfle and Shinji Higuchi are the only "names" that I know of have hated it... which makes me sad, but you can't win em all, I guess.

Jeff's a seriously friendly guy and a die hard like the rest of us, but he's really hard to figure out sometimes. He sees things through... unique eyes.

Steve Ryfle called Pacific Rim "seriously stupid"- which... for a kaiju movie, Pacific Rim is one of the least stupid movies out there. I mean, this guy is a Godzilla movie historian, and THIS is what he considers too stupid for him?

And Norman England (who knows Higuchi) said Higuchi hated it but never specified why.

Still, the fact that Norman liked it is a pretty huge victory for this movie.

I kinda disagree... I don't think its unfair at all. This is all public stuff and if people (especially public figures) are going to put it up there for anybody to see, I think its fair game for discussion, especially when talking about reactions to a film.

Why SHOULDN'T we discuss what a noted author/historian, Godzilla comic artist, and special effects wizard have to say about massive entry into the genre like Pacific Rim?!

I think mentioning individual's opinions in passing ('this prominent guy in fandom thinks that _______') is okay - but basically continuing conversations where the other person isn't present? That a line that must be walked tactfully without becoming meanness.

Don't become bitter, old cat-ladies, guys.

I dunno, I don't there's anything in this thread that is disrespectful of these folks...

I mean, if we were saying "Durr these guys are stupid and probably love Nazis, durr" and being really inflammatory, that would be one thing... but as far as I can see, nobody has crossed that line.
