Just saw it again, this time in 2d. Man, I love it. It has its flaws, but as others have stated, that kinda comes with the kaiju film territory and MOST of the flaws are pretty standard for monster movies.

But it was just a great time. As others have said, one of this movie's main goals seems to be to deliver fun, and it totally succeeds! It absolutely tapped into my inner ten year old (which is a large reason I still love monster movies in general). And I actually liked the characters. The pilots, the commander, the scientists. They weren't clichés, they were archetypes. Just like all the main characters in Star Wars ('77). And I'm a total sucker for a well done, or at least like able archetype character.

But ultimately the film was just a rip-roaring good time featuring giant monsters, giant robots, like able characters and thrilling action. And I just ate it up! Think I might actually go see it a third time in theaters, which is extremely rare for me.

Can I just say something about this movie?

I've noticed some "too cool for school" people in the fandom blowing up their Facebook walls about how they don't care about Pac Rim and how proud they are of themselves that they don't care about this thing that their fellow kaiju fans are swarming over. And saying that we just like it "because it has giant monsters in it." To me, these people are even more offensive than the people who DO "only like it cuz it has giant monsters in it" or the people that ARE overly forgiving of the film's flaws.

Let me tell you why.

I really wish the more cynical people in the fandom would give it a rest with the "WELL IT WAS JUST LIKE THIS AND THIS WAS DUMB" and especially the "I DON'T CARE ABOUT PACIFIC RIM AND I'M GOING TO TELL EVERY KAIJU FAN I KNOW ABOUT IT" stuff... or whatever... Ok, you don't have to like the movie... that's fine, I don't care if someone hates the movie... same thing with cult film fans who bash Tarantino... fine, hate the movies, but this was SUCH a LOVING tribute to our genre in A-list blockbuster form. Can't people at least be happy about that? Del Toro has been telling people to watch War of the Gargantuas, Frankenstein Conquers the World, Matango, etc in every interview for this movie. The guy is ONE OF US and he broke through and got Hollywood to make a 180 million dollar tribute to those things. I mean, even if one doesn't like the movie, you think they would at least respect what it was doing... I think the fact that an A-List director of Hollywood blockbusters even KNOWS what Matango is is f*cking incredible. I mean, I haven't liked a SINGLE Eli Roth film, but I like HIM because the fact that a nerd like that even broke through and makes mainstream horror films that honor more obscure stuff is incredible to me. When I was a kid, I couldn't even find another living soul who knew what the word "kaiju" meant. HATE the movie all you want... but it demands respect, I think. As I mentioned above, I hate Eli Roth's films... but I respect him and his work because the fact that someone putting horror films out in the mainstream that widely reference films like PIECES is incredible to me. Same with the fact that someone of Tarantino's status knows what the Five Deadly Venoms is... that's amazing to me. These are guys like us who broke through and are helping these genres, whether you personally love or hate the films. And for that, I'll always carry respect for them on that level. Kaiju movies are a genre that the rest of the world could really give a sh*t less about. They don't have the mass appeal of other subgenres like slashers, space operas, etc. The public doesn't care. The fact that Legendary and GDT did this is something I don't understand how any kaiju fan (even ones who might hate PR) wouldn't find respectable.

Give it a rest, kaiju hipsters. Nobody cares that you think the movie looks stupid or that you're going to see something else instead. You don't have to like Pacific Rim, but I think any kaiju fan worth their salt would at least be happy that it exists.

So I saw Pacific Rim again this time in 2D. Awesome stuff. I must say this movie looks much much better in 2D on a regular sized screen than it does on Imax 3D. I could hardly follow the action on the Imax screen. But on a regular screen? Pure bliss guys!

I also brought a non-tokusatsu/robot fan to the screening who happens to be one of my best friends. Honestly he ripped the whole movie to shreds. Sometimes I wonder why or how he can't find fun in the simpler things in life. His comments about Pacific Rim are posted below.



-The Jaegers all look the same and we follow the adventures of Gypsy Danger too much.

-All the monsters look the same and overall the design choices made for the robots and monsters were very uninspired.

-The movie had a mess of a cast. The actors and actresses didn't know how to act. Either that or director Del Toro didn't know how to direct.

-The movie and its action sequences were very redundant and uninspired.

-The comedic moments in the movie were all forced or unintentional. I only chuckled a bit here and there because of the lunacy of the scientists and the wardrobe of Hannibal Chau.

-The overall plot of the movie was predictable and not very different from anime like Evangelion or movies like Independence Day.

-Rinko Kikuchi was an ugly Japanese actress to stare at. I don't get how the blue highlights in her hair can represent a homage to Japanese anime?

-I thought Roland Emmerich's White House Down had more laughs and was overall more entertaining

-Even though I hated Star Trek: Into Darkness I still thought it was a better movie than Pacific Rim.

-The special effects were on a technical level well done and better than Michael Bay's Transformers.

Honestly I don't know what to say.,..... How can one poo poo on the movie that much? Its not Academy or Oscar worthy? But is it really that bad? Heck no! Tsk tsk to my friend's own sensibilities and inability to enjoy a fun movie like Pacific Rim.

I was hoping to see more of the first monster attack, or some of the other earlier ones, with all the panic and destruction. Besides that, it really had some good moments in it that really got me. There was some stuff that did not make much sense to me though. Like how did they get back through. I wish more of it was in the day time. I should have seen it in 2D. I have a few issues with 3D. It bugs me. Wish it was in regular Imax. I may see it again in regular format. The short clip of the first one going through the bridge was one of the best visuals of the film for me. I got all excited at that point and then it was over. It would have been nice if they could have made a film that dealt with all the flash back stuff leading up to the Jaeger program and humanity starting to win. Then this film could have been the second one. It was good anyway though. I wanted the one winged Kaiju to fly more. As for films in general, I give it a strong 7.

BTW anybody get a Rodan or Gyaos vibe from that sort of bat-like Kaiju?

I was kinda hoping the "Category 5" Kaiju would be something similar looking to Godzilla...
