I'm finding myself between those who "loved it so muxh they wept" and those with the "meh" attitude.
If I were to generalize (knowing full well this doesn't apply to all) I'd say those who came away let down had their hopes up too high and those who loved it so much they cried would have convinced themselves they liked it even if it was total crap, just because the people involved had obvious passion.
The movie had issues for sure and some plot points didn't quite hang togeyher or might have been better left out altogether, but those complaints range from nitpicks to minor annoyances. No movie is perfec (even my absolute FAVORITE movies have glaring flaws) and I found that the good in this movie FAR outweighed the minimal plot gaps and somewhat cliche characters. I thoght the acting was solid, the chemistry between the members od the cast was great and those two elements combined to elevate the cast above cliche a notch, and in a movie like this, that's better than 90% of what's out there and that INCLUDES the holiest of holies the 90s Gamera films. At the same time, this wasn't some revelatory film that showed once and for all that kaiju eiga can and should be held to a higher standard a la Gojira...it was disappointing to see every kaiju and jaeger destroyed and be unable to return for a sequel, and axehead and raiju were massively underfeatured.
I find myself rather stunned both by those who felt nothing and those who cried like children. It was a solid movie and as a kaiju fan I LOVED the crap out of it, but it wasn't a revelation. It wasn't exactly like a 60s era golden age film, but certain parts of the aesthetic certainly felt that way.
