Just saw it...loved it. It really warmed my heart to see a talented director pay homage to the giant monster genre, AND to see people packing a theater to see it. This is probably the most fun I've had at the movies in a while...I totally felt like I as 6 years old again, watching Mothra vs. Godzilla for the first time.

The dialogue was a little clunky at times, and the action was a tiny bit incoherent (though as others have mentioned, much better than a Transformers movie), and it's definitely a silly movie, but you can tell the filmmakers had genuine love for the subject matter.

I will say I'm a little confused as too why the kaiju went after that guy just because he drifted with a kaiju.

Can any of you actually say that you felt like the world was coming to a end? I didn't feel this at all. The only reason I bring this up is because they were trying to so to pass it off like it was coming to a end.... it just felt like a cool kaiju vs robot movie. I probably would have liked it more, if they just dropped the whole "the world is ending" thing and simply was just kaiju coming from the portal and a group was assembled to counter them.... which is exactly what it felt like... BUT they were going with "the world is ending", and I didn't feel that part of it at all.

It seemed the Category 1, 2, and some 3's would be like the more traditional kaiju from the Godzilla and Ultraman series'. I would probably enjoy those stories much more.

Not saying I didn't like Pacific Rim, but I think they made a mistake with the whole "the world is ending" angle.

I just got back from seeing it in 3d Imax. I loved it. I went in looking for giant monsters versus giant robots, and that's what I got *with* a good cast of characters and some interesting backstories. I though the 3d was ok. Although Imax always makes ok 3d look great.

My favorite characters were actually the two scientists whom I think did a great job of advancing the plot. Although all the main characters were great. My only real complaints were that we really could have used a good daytime combat scene, and somewhat connected, the final battle scene was a little bit confusing because of the darkness and the kaiju involved were a little too same-y(which wasn't the case in the battles beforehand). At least on this viewing. I might change my mind on that last point on a re-watch.

I think Del Toro nailed the subject matter in a way that will make the true fans and the summer popcorn movie crowd happy, which was what I really wanted to see from this movie. Hopefully, this will draw some people out of the latter crowd and into the former to help soar our ranks. :) Del Toro is definitely a fan, and I could tell immediately once I saw the cast on screen in action. Imagine if Michael Bay had cast this? Ouch. It makes my brain hurt.

I haven't commented much in this thread about this movie as its progressed to its release except to say that one of my hopes is that the movie would help warm me to the jaeger and kaiju designs. I think Del Toro accomplished that. Put in an order for the NECA figures. :)

Spoilers:
My only real disappointment is that we didn't get to see enough of the Crimson Typhoon and Cherno Alpha crews and their jaegers in action.

And I thought it a little bit weak that a nuclear blast didn't kill the Cat 5, but it could kill the kaiju aliens on the other side of the portal? And like someone else said upthread, the Cat 5 really didn't feel like a Cat 5.

Thumbs way up on this one. :th-up: :th-up:

Who says these types of movies have to be dark and philosophical in order to be effective?

What this was, was a fun ride much like the better Godzilla 60s films and the best Harryhausen pictures (and what a great dedication to both of these filmmakers by GDT).

Perfect? Hell no, but who cares and why dwell on the negative when it accomplished its purpose – it entertained me as if I was a kid again!

And Ron Perlman was a hoot!
