well, whoever had the bright idea to focus marketing this movie towards people who would have gone to see it without ever seeing a single trailer, piece of concept art, design, or member of the cast should lose his or her job.

I don't entirely agree with that. "It's his film" feels like a really vague answer and begs the question, "Well... why did he do it like this then?" And I can only land on that he loved King Kong and wanted to indulge in it as much as he could.

But lets roll with the idea that he wasn't a good fit for a moment. Even if it's because Jackson's and Zombie's talents aren't a good fit for these movies shouldn't they have recognize that? Would they not be too excited about the prospect of making a King Kong or Halloween film that they forget their style isn't a good match for the property?

Maybe I'm getting a little to existential here, but if offered I wouldn't touch a Godzilla movie with a 10 foot pole. I'm not a good fit for it. (I'd cry every night afterwards, mind you. But I'm confident I'd have made the right choice.)

I can, however, direct my love for the series in other parts of my work. It's not hard to take influences from your favorite franchises and create an original body of work that suits you better. Carpenter, del Toro and Harryhausen's careers are based on that kind of thinking.
