This settles it for me:

I think Godzilla will be the result of a nuclear disaster similar to Fukushima. It may even be an earthquake/tsunami that wakes him up, but the nuclear power that gives him power. The irradiated fishing villages. The abandoned shops, etc.

If Godzilla is relatively newly awakened, I wonder where the other monsters come from? Are all of the monsters the result of the same disaster?

What exactly was your thinking metal_bryan? I'm always fascinated by various origin stories for Godzilla. I went back and read that list of story treatments in this forum and thought they were great.
