pre-Pacific Rim viewing

Postby lhb412 » Mon Jun 24, 2013 9:00 pm

We're T-minus 3 weeks away from the premier of Pacific Rim. Anyone else watching classic genre stuff to prep?

I'm watching a combination of kaiju stuff and super robots: just bought the complete series set of Johnny Sokko, the Gaiking Compilation movies, Shout!'s Gamera v. Gyaos/Viras release, and the recent Gamera the Brave Blu (I've never seen the movie!).

I'll probably watch a some favorite episodes of Big-O and Gurren Lagann, and I'll definitely watch a few of Toho's non-Godzilla kaiju films (I'm gonna start a grand Godzilla re-watch later this year into next year for obvious reasons).

At first I thought I would watch a bunch of del Toro movies, but I'll have plenty of chances for that - this may be the only major Hollywood kaiju/super robot film ever, you know? I might do a GDT marathon after next month when Criterion's Devil's Backbone Blu comes out.

I'm a nerd.

The amount of violence in Johnny Sokko is so insane. This is a children's show where characters commonly spray machine gun rounds into crowds of people - even Johnny is capable of doing so to members of the Gargoyle Gang! The fact that it's just so unrealistic fortunately saves it from becoming disturbing.

I'm gonna try to watch a single kaiju film a day from now on. Never tried anything like that before!

I haven't been watching anything, really, especially not to get ready for PR.

I have, however just started catching up on my Ultraseven viewing. I think I'm up to episode 8 or so. I've been trying to watch at least one episode a day.

I might watch a few things next week to get myself hyped, though I don't really know which ones. I see the '05 remake of Gaiking is on Crackle - I've never watched it, but I might give it a try. I've been meaning to revisit GxMG lately, too.

I wasn't gonna watch any Godzillas, but I got the urge to watch Godzilla vs. Gigan. While not my favorite, it does feel like the definitive '70s Godzilla movie, doesn't it?

I hadn't been planning on anything, but after seeing this thread I might watch War of the Gargantuas at some point tomorrow.

I'd like to watch more, but this part of England is experiencing a mugging heatwave at the moment that's making laying in bed watching movies more uncomfortable than such a thing has any right to be, so probably just that. Or maybe at least scene-selected bits and pieces of certain Godzilla movies, perhaps.
