Ahhhh... you guy's have made me change my mind. Everything about this movie looks terribile.
The macross/patlabor looking robots look like crap.
Seeing strange looking, enormous monsters smash through buildings and crush things under foot and claw doesn't cause a response conditioned since childhood where my brain becomes flooded with endorphins.
For the clunky toy robot looking one that honestly looks like it was assembled by Ultraseven villains I'm left with a feeling I can only describe as ... blasé.
Seeing the enormous bases where the giant robots are kept, serviced, and launched rendered incredibly faithfully from pretty much ever anime, kaiju and tokusatsu but with a level of detail possible with $100 mil+ special effects leaves me feeling cold and empty, like an abandoned Soviet tank in the Siberian tundra.
The fact that the kaiju have energy weapons and toxic saliva stirs no primal emotions within me.
The fact that this movie is full of monsters and that there's a quadrupedal one, a flying creature, one like the stone ape from the Herculoids, and a more reserved reptilian one doesn't comport with my age-old love of films filled with lots of different kinds of monsters. Nope, not one bit.
The vibrant color schemes and exaggerated, expressionistic landscapes (for both natural and man-made environments) doesn't generally conform to my visual preferences at all.
It's clear that this film was made for one reason and one reason only: to come so close to being about everything I love about everything only to intentionally fall short of my impossible standards!
GOOD DAY SIR!
