One thing nobody really mentioned, but I think is worth mentioning, is that Toho wanted an American Godzilla movie in 1998 DONE BY DEVLIN AND EMMERICH. They got dollar signs in their eyes, and if you recall back to then, those two guys were like Michael Bay today: sure-fire box office money-making machines.
One thing to always, always, ALWAYS remember in this business is that it all boils down to MONEY. The only reason this film is happening is that someone, somewhere high up enough thought it would make money and the ONLY reason they are (by all appearances thus far) doing right by the fans is because they think it will make more money.
In 1998, Toho wanted a taste of the Hollywood pie. In 2013, they still do, but they also realize that they want to be able to keep cutting a slice year after year, instead of just once every 15 years.
