Trashy just seems the wrong word to me. A grindhouse-type film with lotsa sex and gore seems more in keeping with 'trashy.' I wouldn't describe Godzilla films and the like as 'campy' either. I think they're more 'whimsical,' you know? Like children's books.

Whimsical (adjective): Given to whimsy; capricious; odd; peculiar; playful; light-hearted or amusing.

I get what the author was saying when he said "trash" and while some kaiju films certainly feel trashy, I think those films are in the minority... if we're using the word the same (we probably aren't though).

I agree with the use of the word "whimsical" though. I tend to think of some of the sillier kaiju films the same way I think of something like the Fleisher Superman cartoons... they're simple, harmless and fun... something like a mad scientist aiming a death ray at the Daily Planet for no real reason might be stupid, but that doesn't mean it isn't without a lot of imagination and care-free spirit to it... and like those Superman cartoons, some of the Godzilla films have an expert level of craftsmanship to them, no matter how absurd they got (for example Monster Zero is a pretty silly movie, but the acting, directing and miniature effects are all 100% solid).
