I went to see this with a friend who had never seen Wrath of Khan. He of course got some of the references, but having not known about the reversal of the death scene until after we watched Into Darkness he thought it worked well for Kirk and Spock's story arc. I'm inclined to agree. It was fan service, yes, but I'm not cynical enough to write that kind of thing off. I also think worked for the characters as well.

The only thing that really bugs me about the movie is Spock contacting Spock Prime. I feel as if the character would've been a lot stronger had he figured out Khan on his own. It deprives this new crew of their ability to think on their feet and confused a lot of audience members I spoke with that are less familiar with Trek.

Otherwise I enjoy it more than the 2009 film. The crew felt tighter by the end and more like the family I typically see them as in the original movies. Happy to go against the grind and like the movie for most of the problems people here have with it. That typically tells me it's pretty good.

I cried when Kirk died.

I also cry pretty much every time I watch Wrath of Khan.

I don't see how anyone could have cried at the Kirk "death."

I mean, I get that you get to see how much Spock actually cares about him and everything, but did anybody really think he was going to die?

I don't see how people can get all emotional about this scene... I mean, in Wrath of Khan, that WAS the death of Spock. You think maybe he's going to live then it smash cuts to his funeral and he's dead as a doornail. And he wasn't SUPPOSED to come back but the studio demanded it for the next movie just because Wrath was such a hit... and even then it took years for them to bring him back in the following film.

In this it was just a plot device because they wanted to rehash something that was done in a better movie.

I just... I fail to see where the emotional resonance is.

I get emotional REALLY easily when I watch movies and I think, even though I new Kirk was going to be revived, the moment he days is built up to so well and played so perfectly that I just couldn't help myself. I'm a HUGE softie when it comes to movies though. I literally bawled for the last half hour of 50/50 (though that was a subject I was more intimately familiar with).
