My impression was that Kirk never actually died. He was unconscious and maybe presumed dead but wasn't quite there yet when they got him to sick bay. So he was given the serum while his body was technically still alive, barely. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it.
Either way, count me as one who liked the movie. It's not perfect and can certainly be picked apart if you want to, but it had great characters with good dialogue and a fun story. There were plenty of fun nods to past Trek stuff and fun new twists. And I liked what they did with the third act mirroring the original Wrath of Kahn but with a twist. It was fitting.
And Spock was freaking awesome. That final fight was great. My wife and I both cheered when he broke out the nerve pinch (which was awesome to see it being the one thing that really hurt Kahn, but even it wasn't enough!).
I think it was every bit as entertaining as the first Abrams Star Trek, which I thought was also great. And that's all I really wanted. An entertaining film that is clearly Star Trek, but also fresh and new and I think both films deliver. They've definitely been better than anything from something like the Marvel universe (save for the avengers). I don't dislike the marvel films, they've all just kinda been ok.
But maybe I'm the audience these new Trek films are made for. I never liked Star Trek as a kid. As an adult I've found that I do, in fact, enjoy it (TOS is the best, IMO), but I also don't carry any real baggage about what it should or shouldn't be. As long as its entertaining and hits the right notes most of the time to feel like Star Trek, I'm happy.
