Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

First off, let me know I'm not a big Trek guy. Aside from some episodes of the original series and the last Abrams film, I'm a total n00b. Now, I actually DID watch Wrath of Kahn earlier tonight (FOR THE FIRST TIME AND IT WAS AWESOME). I kind of took a crash course in Trek before going.
So that being said, on with my thoughts...

I really liked it but the last act is god awful.

Now I wasn't a huge fan of the last movie... I think overall, I did enjoy this one better, but it is plagued with the same problems. The pacing is super fast with something awful happening to the crew and some deus ex machina constantly saving the day. We get it, Abrams, you love Spielberg, but don't ape the worst things about him. And why was Carol Marcus in this again? Another character crowbarred in just for familiarity... "oh, she's only there to deliver exposition about how her dad might be crooked because there's no way any other character could have figured that out?" Ok, so she's just a plot device and an excuse to have a girl in her underwear? Also, the Spock and Ohura (sp?) is still pretty pointless.

-What was up with New Spock skyping in old Spock for no reason?

Anyway, the last act of this movie was simply awful. ESPECIALLY that fake "death" scene that was so pandering that it became insulting (especially when a certain line is uttered). Right down to the dialogue, it was pretty much exacrtly the same. Only it has no impact because 1. Unlike Spock in part 2 (who was actually supposed to stay dead until the studio decided to bring him back), you KNOW Kirk is going to live, especially when the way to save him is telegraphed like 40 minutes into the movie. Secondly, why couldn't they have just taken blood from some of Kahn's frozen crew instead of him?

Its like the whole movie went on doing its own thing and the last thing they wanted to do was remind you of Trek 2, then they realized "HEY WE GOTTA HIT THESE BEATS FROM TREK 2 ONLY THIS TIME IT DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING.." Like I said, I just found it to be something they just crowbarred in for familiarity's sake. Up until that point, I was pleasantly surprised at how much it was doing its own thing.

I did enjoy the movie, but like the first one, its not something I see myself going back to. The cast is great, they nail the Kirk/Spock dynamic, but its sudden baffling reliance to imitate a classic film and the lazy writing in the end really drags it down.

The stuff that works REALLY REALLY works... in spades... but the stuff that doesn't work really sh*ts the bed.

I think they really just needs to drop Kurtzman and Orci. These guys couldn't write their way out of a paper bag and I'm of the opinion that they're practically Ehran Kruger levels of bad. The rumor that these clowns might direct ST 3 is downright terrifying.

The movie is bogged down with a lot of problems (the biggest of which, to me are it's nods and homages to the original Star Trek II).

As for two of your concerns

Cumberbatch's character uses Transwarp beaming, which is discovered by Scotty in the TNG/VOY/DS9 era of the old timeline. This is a major point in the first film. It allows you to beam pretty much everywhere. Scotty states that Starfleet Intelligence confiscates his formula, though that doesn't explain why he still can't use it. He had to have written it down somewhere.

And The best reason I can think of for not waking up Khan's crew is that they just don't want to risk it, Oh, and they want a big Spock/Khanfrontation.

Also, did anyone feel the last line was really clumsy? Kirk goes on about how Pike first told him the captain's oath or something and then says the whole "Space, the Final Frontier.." thing....which doesn't sound anything like an oath. It's weird, but I'm probably the only one who was a little bothered by it.

Seeing this tonight. I have no idea what to expect.

If I could try to boil all the different reviews about this film that I've seen it'd be this: "Basically it's even more polarizing than Trek 09. Old school Trek fans don't seem to like the film all that much with most citing a terrible last act, while Trek newcomers seem to like the film for the most part."

Since I'm an old school Trek fan, I'll keep my expectations low.

My problem isn't the changes from the old Trek since I barely know anything about Star Trek. But having watched Wrath of Kahn, the rehashes towards the end were pointless, emotionless and lame pandering. And the utterance of that famous line was Vader "Nooo" levels of terrible.

Wow, it took 5 months, but this is the first movie this year that has actually been really really good. The characters were well done, the one liners were funny, the plot was interesting and had some plot twists I did not see coming. I do have a few nitpicks with the movie, one of them includes they pretty much brought in this blonde woman who is there just to create a love interest for Kirk. There are also some pacing issues I have with the movie, especially in its first half hour. Outside of that though, the movie is great. Harrington (played by Sherlock's actor) easily steals the show and turns out an incredible performance. Once again every scene with Simon Pegg is phenomenal and all of the one liners from Bones are hilarious. There is nothing after the credits so you don't need to stay through them if you don't want to. This movie does a great job of not sabotaging the first movie and keeps your body moving through the entire thing. Yes, I went there for those of you that I know as to what I am referring to. :-) Overall, I give the movie a 9/10 and it is by far the best movie to come out this year!!

Oh yeah, by the way, who else is expecting gay fanfiction to come out of the scene when Kirk and Spock were touching each other's hands through the glass? I could not help but laugh and facepalm.
