Lol you just made that scene all too real for me. As a coffee junkie I can sympathize with feeling a little groggy in the morning.

Due to familial crisis I have to put off this film until either the end of this week or next.

Think I figured it out...fire, burial, or dismemberment only saves the soul of the initial person to be possessed. This individual acts sort of like a hub for whenever Deadites try to break through into our world.

So first the girl in the beginning is possessed, she's the first hub. She kills her mother, sending her soul to hell. The daughter is then burned, and thus saved.

Then Mia is possessed, becoming the second hub. Natalie, Eric, Olivia, and David are killed as a result, and their souls are sent to Hell. Mia is buried, so her soul is saved, but even though her friends are burned in the cabin, they still stay in Hell and add to the 5 souls.

in regards to the souls thing, they do mention something about the original host for the deadites having more significance. I'd need to see it again to remember exactly what it was, but I'm pretty sure you have it (or are extremely close)

Just got back from seeing this and I can say I enjoyed it immensely! Haven't seen a good gore-fest in quite some time. There were a couple of scenes that had me squirming in my seat, the whole tongue/razor knife bit being one of them. And I gotta say, judging by some of the comments I've seen elsewhere, I can't help but wonder if some of these people have ever seen the original. "No humor"? There was none in the original. All in all, a nice remake/update, ala John Carpenter's "The Thing" and the '78 version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", imo.
