The callbacks feel like callbacks and I didn't like any of the new stuff.

The great "evil" is a naked woman/man that can't walk and lumbers around like a Romero zombie. Talk about anti-climatic.

Spoiler:

that's NOT the great evil though...because Mia's soul is never consumed, because Mia never dies. That's Mia's demon. Hence, she completes the metaphor (not so subtley) that begins with her attempting to overcome her drug addiction of battling her demons.

Where are you people getting this "I root for Ash in the original" stuff?

I honestly think the ONLY reason people think/say this is because of what Ash becomes in the sequels. Because in the original film, he's just there. You don't particularly want him to die, but you don't particularly care either way. In fact, Linda seems the more sympathetic character in the original film.

And I don't know how people can say they want these characters to die.

Mia is attempting to better herself and going through a really hard time on top of which her own best friends don't trust or believe her when things start to go bad. You want people like that to die?
Eric is a bit of a douchey college hippie, but he goes through SO MUCH and he basically tries to help and save everyone, actively putting himself in harm's way multiple times. You guys WANT heroic-type guys to get killed?

I'm befuddled to say the least. Sure, this movie lacks any characters with a personality POP like Ash in ED2 or AoD, but so does the first film. At least this film brings us the first characters other than Ash in ED2 and AoD that we care about even slightly.

Spoilers:
And in any subsequent (and likely) sequel, I could see Mia becoming very Ash-like given everything she goes through in this film.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I liked that it had the references and allusions to make it feel like an Evil Dead movie, but it also threw in some new stuff to prevent it from being a boring, point-by-point redo of the original.

Maybe I'm just getting squeamish in my old age, or maybe it's the fact that horror movie special effects have come a long way since the 1980s, but good God, this movie is violent. There were several parts I had a difficult time watching.

I also liked that the acting and dialogue were decent and the characters were actually likeable. Well, there were a few characters that were just kinda...there. But I enjoyed that the beginning sets up some backstory and some conflict between the different people, and some of them even have a bit of an arc over the course of the film.

I'm a little confused about the ending, though....SPOILERS:

So they say that if the demons consume 5 souls, then the sky will rain blood and the Abomination will rise from the Earth. They also say that fire, a live burial, or dismemberment will save someone's soul. So they burn the girl in the beginning, saving her. Then the Deadites take Natalie, Eric, and Olivia. Mia is possessed but then saved via live burial and resuscitation. Then it starts raining blood and the Abomination pops out of the ground. So who were the 4th and 5th souls?

Concerning the Abomination, why do you suppose it took on Mia's form? Just to mess with her?
