Unfortunately, I can't see us getting an upgrade to this release any time soon, if ever.

Sadly, this will have to be as good as it gets.

Watched the bluray last night and then popped the dvd in to compare. The bluray is *MUCH* better than the dvd, and a definite step up. However, everyone that is criticizing the picture quality aren't far off the mark either because of how dismal the dvd starting point is. There were a couple instances where the suit looks fantastic, but most of the time the picture's not very crisp and feels oversaturated. At best it looks like a half-decent dvd transfer, not a bluray and it's definitely more than watchable. If the restoration footage extra is really a sample of the source material they had to use, then it wasn't going to look any better than this. In fact, they did a fairly decent job if that's the case. Although I question the vertical lines that pop up in certain scenes that look like they could have been easily fixable/masked.

I kind of miss the 5.1 from the dvd. Yeah, I know it was overdone and nothing like the theatrical soundtrack, but I liked it. Although the extras on the bluray far suprass the dvd, so I really have no reason to keep the dvd now. I'm planning on passing it along to a friend. To be honest, I was much more dissappointed by the Biollante bluray than this.

Watching this now...you guys weren't kidding. Looks really grainy and distorted for a blu ray. Better than the dvd but it's a very uneven release. I recommend it though as I doubt we'll get a better one.

What do you mean by "distorted"? As being grainy, those opticals and stock footage shots are going to be grainy no matter what, whether they transferred the film on a camcorder pointed into a projector, or scanned it in 8k on a Northlight II... it's just the nature of opticals and stock footage, particularly with the duplication stocks available at the time of the film's production.

Just finished watching the disc, and after reading all the semi-negative reviews, I was pleasantly surprised by how decent the transfer is. Sure, it's not a Criterion restoration or even a Blue Underground, but it's the best the film has ever looked on home video, and is likely to ever look. Some sequences look great (mostly the monster sequences)!

Honestly, this is the best version I have ever seen! Pretty happy with it. Heck, when I first bought a copy of this movie back in 1989, it was a public domain video, but still was happy to have it!

Kudos to all involved in the disk.

Just watched my copy. I thought it was a pretty good quality Blu-Ray of a film that's not in fantastic shape and is really grainy in a lot of places naturally because of the composite footage and stock shots. Best it's gonna look unless someone does an intensive restoration. Some wonderful extra features, too.
