I'd have liked it better if the alien hadn't looked like the Bad Robot version of a Machamp.... I liked Clover and the parasites, but I haven't been much of fan of the rest of the monsters that have come out of the JJ Abrams school of creature design.

Watched Equinox (1970) last night. Weird movie, but somewhat enjoyable just for the low budget stop motion that appears here and there.

Return of the Vampire - a couple cool ideas, but a generally sloppy, bad movie.

Hobo with a Shotgun - I wish all B-movies were like this...this movie embraces its own insanity and I love that. LOVE that. I mean, not only is it crazy and outlandish and the blood levels are off the charts, but there are also just ridiculous bits of dialogue, like, "You better cut one [a check] for Mother Theresa too, because she'll be fingerbanging you in hell!" and "We're gonna go on a car ride to hell...you'll ride SHOTGUN!"

Hard Candy - I really liked this. There were a few moments where it taxed my suspension of disbelief a little too much (in order to avoid SPOILERS: I had a hard time buying a lot of the stuff she was doing physically, given the size difference between her and the dude. She's like 90 lbs and he's like 150, and she's lifting him onto tables and dragging him around and beating him up...Also, I kinda didn't like how they "show you" his testicles in the glass, it's a bit too much of a red herring ) but leaving those aside, it was a great movie, which makes you unsure at various points who is the good/bad guy, until you just say "both" and watch the movie as a neutral observer.

Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

Spent the last three days in the hospital with my grandfather, took the opportunity to re-watch all of the Evil Dead films.

As I get older I like Army of Darkness less and less. I still think Evil Dead 2 is my favorite film of the series.

I also still can't imagine Evil Dead being terrifying. Maybe I was just too old when I watched it (14/15), although the moment when Linda gets stabbed in the ankle is still super cringe worthy.

Machete - more like "MEH"chete, amirite?
The use of CG bothered me, didn't feel like it was in the spirit of a Grindhouse film. The story was all-over the place and not in a good way. Definitely not up to the level of Planet Terror or Hobo with a Shotgun AT ALL.

Nightbreed - why can't we have a good release with the director's cut?

Spring Breakers- Absurd trash art. Not very good, but very amusing, mostly due to James Franco, who is simply astounding in this movie. He MAKES the movie, IMO. Other than that, this movie is truly, utterly stupid, but I guess to weirdos like me, that's part of the charm. I can't wait until Franco's "LOOK AT MY SH*T" scene is on Youtube so I can watch it over and over and over and over. That said, I'm not a huge Harmony Korine fan and a lot of the problems I have with his other films are in here also.

Seven Psychopaths- A pretty clever little meta-film. I really enjoy movies about screenwriting, and this is no ADAPTATION, but its in a similar vein. And its the best Christopher Walken has been in forever.

Stoker- Loved it. Best movie I've seen so far this year and I'll be shocked if it doesn't make my top 10 at the end of the year. A fantastic slow burn thriller... Everything I wanted it to be. I loved the third act and I LOVE the way it ended. The direction it takes half way through is absolutely brilliant and like nothing I'd have expected. The kind of audacious and provocative film making that I love and look for in a film from Chan Wook Park. What a talent, that guy.
