What if the movie is a lot more uplifting than we think? ie: a change from the grim and serious world of Nolan?

I doubt it though.

^I feel dirty just reading that. What they hell is wrong with the people who run these companies? Do they think: "hey, I've loved these characters since I was a kid, but I'm an adult now, so we should make these characters mature by adding as much rape and mutilation as possible!" ?

What if Superman is a beacon of hope (who just kicks a lot of ass) in a cynical world (i.e. our own)??

I mean, it's kind of like comparing Showa Gamera/Ultraman/Ultraseven to Hesei Gamera/Ultraman Nexus/Ultraseven X. The newer takes are still every bit as uplifting and heroic as the older stuff, it's just they all present newer (was going to say more realistic but that's not even true when you look at Nexus and Ultraseven X), takes on everything that happen to take place in darker worlds that resemble our own a bit more. Simply put, our heroes grow up with us. These newer takes are meant to inspire adults. I like it, but I'm the target audience. It just has to be done right which is where TASM fails. I don't hate that film just because it's "dark" or Nolan-esque...I hate it because it's a turd sandwhich.

Still, I understand the backlash going on against these takes. Noriaki Yuasa's quote about GOTU, "Made for fanboys, by fanboys" makes total sense to me regarding almost all of these newer takes on heroes. Yes, they're for adults (really, what 7 yr old kid enjoys something like TDK or Gamera 3??) and that's great for us, but there still needs to be stuff out there for kids too. Nexus and Seven X both failed to garner big followings from children, even if they weren't designed to, it doesn't really matter...it took something like Max and Mebius to make that character even semi relevant to children. Now, you can go too far in the other direction where children think you're making things too soft and gentle ala Gamera The Brave.

So, after this long diatribe of mine, where I've somehow tied in Gamera and Ultraman with Superman and TASM I'll boil my points down to this. I'm not offened by MOS, I'll just be offended if it's bad or doesn't do the character of Superman justice. These are essentially movies for adults and teenagers and they're kind of cynical in nature. That's fine. It's an interesting take on the characters. I do lament though, that there's not enough of a variety out there. Sure, Marvel's stuff is deff more family friendly, but we could really use a few more Speed Racer or Spy Kids like films in the superhero genre. Simply put, let's put a little more "Showa-era" type stuff out there.

For intstance, I'm sure the new Godzilla film/series will be amazing and finally go full circle back to Honda's original vision, but you know what? After this next series of G films is over, I really want something that's basically a redux of the 70's era films please. There's a time and a place for everything. And I'd like to the children of the next generation to be able to appreciate the heroes, and characters from ours. Excessively dark takes on heroes are great for us, but in the long run, it might hurt the characters a bit because children won't have grown up idolizing them, so they won't fight to preserve these characters for the next generation.

Look at something like The Ninja Turtles for how to do it right. There's stuff out there for adult fans and every decade or so, an excellent cartoon series comes out that kids latch onto, perpetuating the cycle.

Hate to say it, but I agree with jelly.

If a 6 year old can't go see a Batman movie or play a Batman game (maybe till he's about 11 or 12+), that's probably about right. But if he can't see a Superman movie or play a Superman game, then there is something really wrong with that IMO.

Well I certainly don't think anyone is going to disagree with that. We all know the box office numbers.
