Not only that, but this movie being a hit is really what will determine the character's fate, both in terms of pop culture and as an ongoing franchise.
If a true Godzilla movie with Hollywood talent and budgets isn't a hit, then Toho won't think anything will be. If this movie bombs John Carter style, its pretty much the end. Japan isn't interested in Godzilla, they're much more into Hollywood blockbusters and if a Hollywood blockbuster with their biggest franchise attached to it is a bomb, that'll be the end of Godzilla on both sides of the Pacific. Neither the US or Japan will have any reason to do another Godzilla, really ever. It'll have been a whole decade since the Final Wars debacle, and if a big Hollywood comeback doesn't save Godzilla, nothing will.
If it comes out the same weekend as TMNT, TMNT has the potential to utterly BURY it.
