It's really very simple. Godzilla is a "territorial" animal protecting his turf from man and monster alike. There is no distinction in his so called "transformation". Still the same beast in my eyes and I'm sure from the the perspectives of Toho, he will always be one and the same. That's the only way to keep Godzilla relevant on every level. If Darabont doesn't realize this, he's missing a key aspect of the character and avoid any confusion.
