I don't think anybody in particular is trying to "put down" that version of the character as much as pointing out that it doesn't make any real logical sense.

Regardless, just as you don't like people who don't "accept" that version of the character or whatever, what is wrong with liking one version of a character and not another?

Some people just don't dig on hero Godzilla and I can't fault anybody for that. Especially since it gets away from what made him so great originally.

I have a similar problem with Rambo. First Blood is a fantastic film about an incredibly damaged and insane post-Nam vet and his downward spiral into self destruction. But I just can't can't CAN'T get behind the sequels where he's portrayed as this amazing action hero who saves the day and runs away from explosions. It just doesn't work for me. So I have no problem with someone who isn't into the hero Godzilla even if I like it myself.

I have a similiar problem with Godzilla and Rambo.

For instance, Rambo...I can only enjoy the first and last film for that reason.

Godzilla...my prefered Godzilla is from 54/84. Though I can enjoy the early Godzillas up until about 67...it's just never made any sense to me. I'd much rather those same stories have been Ultraman or Gamera stories. They're fun...they just don't scream Godzilla to me.

Edit*

There's always been a disconnect in Godzilla films between the icon that is Godzilla, and what the initial concept of Godzilla was.

This new film seems to be taking it back to what Godzilla initially was. Now, I've always been a fan of the two Godzillas concept introduced in GRA. It kind of allows you for two different takes on the subject without having to dilute the core of what makes the first Godzilla so powerful.

So you have the Godzilla that's popular in the culture's mind..that hero Godzilla that fights Megalon and then you have the initial concept of Godzilla. It's hard to splice the two together....the Hesei series tried and I think it resulted in a Godzilla with a personality that no one, or very few people, really cared about.

I like the Godzilla films when he's the "anti-hero", yet I always enjoyed the films where Godzilla was the bad guy much more. G54 and G84 are in my top 5 because of this reason.... I enjoy plenty of Showa films, don't get that wrong.
