Watched The Possession last night. I would hate the title if it weren't a pun, but it is a pun, so it gets a pass.

Anyway, overall a very good flick, although it leaves a couple of emotional arcs still dangling at the end. Very creepy atmosphere, with a construction that is often reminiscent of 70s horror flicks without being self-consciously retro about it.

Lincoln

Terrific film. Great performances; a focused, satisfying narrative. If this is Oscar bait than I have to hand it to Spielberg for making a delicious pie out of worms and other assorted grubs!

Fantasia 2000 - I hadn't watched this one in several years, so I wasn't sure how well it'd hold up. Overall, it's merely good. There are some really great sequences in there - Pines of Rome (with the flying whales), Rhapsody in Blue, The Firebird Suite - with awesome animation and fun storylines. It's far from great, though. My second-biggest problem is that, for such a short movie, the middle section really sags. The sequence with the Steadfast Tin Soldier has really rough CG animation, The Carnival of the Animals is too short and insubstantial, and Pomp and Circumstance really needed something better to go with it than Donald Duck on Noah's Ark. But the movie's biggest sin is that it doesn't aspire to the same level of greatness as the original. It spends a lot of time pandering to the audience instead of trying to put on a great show. If they make a third Fantasia - and they should - I'd hope for something more in line with the first.

Watched the Frighteners (1996), it was alright. It'd been a really long time since I'd seen it....what a weird film. It was still alright.

The Grey - (Some spoilers for those who haven't seen it) was a bit surprised not to see a thread for this...anyway, this thing was pretty awesome. Watched it earlier (before Dredd) and was pretty impressed. Honestly, the only thing that kept it from working for me 100% is the water scene towards the end.

I've fallen into like 50-degree water before and it was a shock to my body. Sucked all the air out of my lungs and my muscles almost seized up...falling into that water would be a death sentence...especially considering how long they spend in it.

If they had changed that (and they could have), then there'd only be ONE complaint I'd have and it'd be MINOR (ie, when they cross the river on the "rope" and the wolves are like instantly on the other side...but that's explainable as the wolves could know of places to cross/tunnels/caves that our characters don't)

Still, really impressed with how the movie had actual characters and I thought the score was pretty great too.

Insidious - Not sure if anyone here has ever heard of it, but we just watched it off of Netflix and it was absolutely stupid. It had only one really good scene in the movie while the rest of it was just another Exorcism movie rehash that has been done a million times. There was nothing scary or even suspenseful about it.
