Why must everything about this film be compared to Kaneko's?

Does the older Gamera look good? IMO, yes. Does it look "better" than any of the 90's Gamera's? No, not really..but so what? He still looks bad ass in his own right.

You know, it's interesting. You don't see a lot of people comparing Showa and Heisei Gamera films because "they're so different", and I really wish the same thing applied here. It seems that any conversation about GAMERA THE BRAVE devolves into "Well, It wasn't as good as the Heisei Gamera's". :?

I'm not knocking on you, king_ghidorah, or anyone specifically, I just think it's kind of unfortunate.

^I agree with you there.

My feelings on it might even be amplified, because I don't think Kaneko's series is the be all, end all of the kaiju genre.
Except for maybe G2, which I definitely believe to be the BEST Gamera film ever and more than likely in perpetuity.

It may have something with the frequency of how often a particular title is recycled, er... I mean "reimagined"

There are fewer and fewer original ideas as opposed to going back to what people like More & More.

There were 15 years between the last Showa & first Heisei Gamera, as opposed to only 7 between the last Heisei and GtB (less than half the time)

There was 21 years between the end of the Batman TV series, and the 1989 Batman Movie. Only 8 years between B&R and BB.

Admittedly GtB box office failure prevented further movies in that series, but Since the world has been without Godzilla for eight years, and Gamera for six, I'm sure all of us as fans would welcome a new entry. Unfortunately the movie makers dont agree and dont see it as profitable at this point (2014 LDP Godzilla will be very interesting from a financial Point of View). I guess the point of all this is that fans most often compare one verison of something to what immidiately came before because its what's fresh in their minds.

I'm not a big fan of GtB. NOT because it "isn't as good as Heisei" Gamera, but just because the film dosen't appeal to me in general. I try to let every film stand on its own merits. Comparison is fun for discussion, but I dont let what came before determine whether what is current is "good" or not.
There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

I don't think we're saying it's "not good" because it's not upto par with the Hesei series. I think we've all stated issues with the film based on its own merits. Regardless, comparing the two different eras is unavoidable.

Honestly, this is probably my second or third favorite Gamera film of all time. Depends on how I feel about Legion at any given time, really, but I definitely prefer it on the whole to Guardian of the Universe (though that film still gives me a raging hard-on).

Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.
