As for the Marvel vs DC debate, I've flip flopped with my preference throughout the years.
Right now I don't really prefer either but I lean more towards Marvel because DC is just all over the damn place.
As far as characters go, they both have their greats and their losers. The difference is that ALL of Marvel's greats are pretty much awesome, while DC has a lot of fairly popular A and B listers that are flat out lame (Aquaman, Hawkman, Shazam- I realize that's heresy in some circles but I always thought those guys were clowns).
But they also have Green Arrow, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern, all of who are awesome.
But Batman and Superman IMO trump any Marvel heroes with the possible exception of Spider-Man (as I said, those are my unbeatable top 3).
And that Whedon quote is actually pretty good. KG also hit the nail on the head in calling them "relics." Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman are timeless, and there is great potential to update a character like Green Lantern. But characters like Aquaman and Captain Marvel (I mean "Shazam") would need a lot of work to make them more contemporary (although I have heard the new 52 has done a decent job of making Aquaman more modern).
It isn't that DC's characters are BAD, but they are almost too archetypal for the mainstream right now. Maybe when Marvel mania is over, the public will be craving characters like that a bit more.
