i don't know if i'd go so far as to say that the second fight sucks...but it definitely lacks the same impact.
i think there's a decent sense of tension in that second fight, because you really don't know for sure what Christopher Nolan is going to do in terms of how Batman will stop Bane and all that, but as you said, the lack of music in that first fight scene just makes every single punch seem like a death-blow and it makes the futility of Batman against the force that is Bane all the more obvious.

and i have somewhat mixed feelings on the "overuse" of music in the Nolan Bat films...I'm kinda against it in theory, but often, it's so minimalistic that it's not like it's distracting or anything

The second fight starts off cool but it peters out with Bane lying in a corner crying for 5 minutes and then getting killed by a Catwoman deux ex machina. Its a total anticlimax.

The first one ends with him shattering Batman's mask and breaking his back.

I think we all know which one is better.

i don't think the "crying in a corner" thing is super valid, but i definitely get the point you're making and i don't disagree.

also, i PERSONALLY don't have a problem with the Catwoman deus ex machina...mostly for the same reason i don't think the second fight needed to be longer or more intense or anything like that, the REAL battle had already been fought and dragging it out longer would just have added extra running time to an already pretty lengthy film.
also, the OCCASIONAL anticlimax isn't that insulting to me. especially when there have been a few satisfying climaxes in the series already, and there are definitely other climactic, gripping scenes in this film alone that provide plenty of tension.

Oh, I don't mean to make it sound like I'm complaining. Is it a bit underwhelming? Sure. But does it bother me? No, not really.

I'm just using it to further the original point that the first fight is lightyears better

So I watched TDK again tonight... and I still didn't see the monorail in the Gotham sky shots. I'm calling for screencaps and arrows.
