Kick Ass was on TV yesterday. That's exactly the type of movie it is for me. When it's on, I'll watch it. I know a lot of people didn't like it, and while I didn't LOVE it, I liked it.

Also watched In the Mouth of Madness - Sam Neil is an amazing actor. Dude is freaking captivating in every movie I've ever seen him.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939)

God, this movie is great! Some great actors, chief among them Laughton as Quasimodo. Amazing spectacle, I mean, this is 1939: these are huge sets, these are thousands of extras! Beautifully shot, immensely quotable.

Magic Mike - one of the ugliest movies I've seen...the colors in every scene, specifically and especially the outdoor scenes, were so atrocious and felt so off and so ugly that i actually went through and checked all the connections on my player, receiver, and projector...i even played another movie right after just to double-check the colors to make sure something hadn't broken...

The movie itself...eh, if you've seen one movie where someone is "on top of the world on their way up" and then gets knocked down by their so-called "friends" and then realizes that the brass-ring they were chasing isn't as important as the love of their life and being happy rather than rich...you've seen 'em all. AND the love story wasn't even developed well AT ALL.

Channing Tatum actually gives a pretty solid performance though, as do most of the actors, honestly.

Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

Watching my TCM set of Errol Flynn swashbucklers...

Captain Blood

Love this film. The ultimate pirate movie... mind you, I haven't watched The Sea Hawk, yet (I'll try to get to it tomorrow). Although largely this same group would make the superior Robin Hood a few years later, a film that takes what they learned here and turns it up to 11, this one doesn't feel like a dress-rehearsal for the more famous follow-up: the different settings and scenes of extreme cruelty on the part of the villains give this film a grittier and less celebratory tone.

The Adventures of Robin Hood

One of my all time favorite films - naturally, I watched my Blu-Ray in lieu of the copy included on this DVD set. Probably the best adventure film of all time. One of the best casts of all time. Some of the most beautiful color ever in a film. Some of the most memorable action sequences in film.

It's awesome-sauce with a cherry on top.

The Prisoner of Zenda (1952)

A nearly shot-for-shot, line-for-line remake of the film I watched a few days ago, which raises the all-important question: what's the point?

The first film was beautifully shot and had an excellent cast, this one has a fairly good cast (but far less into it) and tries to ape most of the camera angles, leading to 100 minutes of "the other guy sold that line better" and "lighting was better in this shot in the other film."
