A couple of shots of my Second Doctor costume from the party I attended over the weekend:

^ Wow. that is a pretty harsh assessment, it has considerably better rotten tomato and imdb scores than most horror flicks.

'The Descent' is one of my top horror films of all time. i won't defend 'Doomsday' as anything but a "fun" movie, and 'Centurion' is easily forgettable...

I absolutely hated The Descent. It's been too long since I saw it for me to remember all of the details, but, basically, I hated the characters, I hated the structure, I hate the photography, I felt like it relied on a bunch of badly executed jump-scares, and I felt like it totally failed to do justice to its concept.

The Descent would get my hands-down vote for most overrated horror film of all-time. An excellent premise turns into an execrable pile of crap in the hands of a complete hack of a filmmaker. Dog Soldiers is surprisingly even worse. Laughably made, with literally ONLY the good werewolf suits to offer in terms of redeeming qualities.

Doomsday is the only Marshall film I like and I only like it because it is so positively awful and such a ripoff of every other movie ever made that it's impossible not to enjoy on an ironic level.

Neill Marshall sucks. and blows. chunks.

I didn't care for The Descent either. Part of it has to do with seeing The Cave first (and while the movie is pretty bad, but ending was awesome), while another portion has to do with the lackluster ending that ruined the entire movie for me. Instead of having any climax, they just ended it with the girl stuck inside. Wow, how exciting. Plus, I swear, these are the dumbest girls ever.

I'm finding it really interesting that this forum is the only place I can find other people that didn't like The Descent, which has pretty much become a huge modern cult classic.

Its kind of refreshing to know I'm not the only one. I always feel like I should go back and give it another chance but I just never have the desire to. I just remembered thinking the characters were unbearable (even the "sympathetic" ones) and the monsters were boring, even if the practical effects were good.

And I kinda agree with Kain... The theatrical cop-out ending wasn't good at all, but I didn't find the "oh, it was all in her head and she killed everyone" ending to be that interesting either. Maybe if I thought the character was more interesting, I would have appreciated that twist more, but as it was, I just remember not being very impressed.

Hellboy

Okay, not exactly horror, but I feel that GDT's Hellboy films are just a celebration of monsters (especially the second) - and hey; this film is set during Halloween! It's not terribly important, but it does lend a nice atmosphere to the first third of the film.

Of course, this is the film that began my obsession with both Guillermo del Toro's filmography and Mike Mignola's cloven-hooved hero, and it's a pretty strong one, though perhaps a touch constrained by budget and a sense of not wanting to let it get too weird (such trepidation vanishes in the second). The Myers character serves only the purpose of having a 'normal guy' amid all the freaks and he becomes annoying superfluous once we get to know and identify with Hellboy.
