Personally, I think GFW is actually a more respectful film than Destoroyah, which shamelessly, and lazily cashes in on and exploits the original film for absolutely no reason other than to make money.

Kitamura references so many little things and throws out so many winks that it's impossible for me to think he's just dragging Godzilla through the mud. now, it's been a bit since i've seen this movie, and 50-some slasher films have admittedly warped my mind, so i can't remember specifics, but Kitamura references so many OBSCURE items from Toho filmdom that it's hard for me to believe he was just throwing out random references in an attempt to get fanboys on his side.
If he was doing that, he would have just referenced a bunch of Godzilla stuff randomly and without purpose, and while much of this movie is random and without purpose, he references some obscure non-Godzilla things that are important to his plot...

A bad movie? Yep.
An unenjoyable film? Arguably (though not the argument I'd make)
A disrespectful cash-in? No.
Gills.

HERE'S A QUESTION THEN.

How come the "One blow kill" Godzilla gets a pass in GMK, but everyone complains about it in GFW. To my knowledge, Kaneko and Kitamura did it for the very same reason... to show Godzilla as the absolute strongest monster out there. How is the depiction of Mothra in that film any more respectable than the depiction of say, Rodan, here?

I'm not saying it makes for compelling battles, but come on, if you're gonna dogpile on one film for something, spread it out a bit. The monsters in GMK pose NO THREAT whatsoever, at least not until the VERY end when KG gets all super powered... and even then, he isn't much of a foil for Godzilla. General Tachibana and his drill sub thing are what really puts Godzilla down (which could also be (mis)interpeted as insulting to the character... having him kill the monsters so easily but struggling so much with the humans).

I don't mean this with any offensive intent, but it just seems like a double standard to me that something like this is "insulting" when its in GFW, but its ok when someone like Kaneko does it. I don't necessarily mean that directed towards any one in particular, so I don't want you to get the wrong idea, Bryan. Not trying to call you out or anything, its just that these are the things that run through my mind when I see stuff like that posted.

I don't even mean to come off as defensive when it comes to GFW... I mean... I KNOW the movie isn't good

PS- COME ON, the "soccer" moment is awesome and PURE Showa. "This aggression will not stand, man."
