Hard to compare the 2 series as they both have their highs, lows as well as moments of really naive execution....
Just a bunch of random thoughts and issues:
-Dont like the beam wars aspect of hesei, save for the few instances where context mattered. The destruction of the super x., destruction of mechagodzilla with the red beam....such a shame given how instances of physicality were clever (ghidorah strangling godzilla etc.)
-They really screwed Rodan over, his size and presentation and battle with godzilla were horrible (in my book Rodan is 2nd only to godzilla and I wanted a proper battle between them)
-whoever came up with the nuclear pulse, deserved a raise.
-I hate the way the hesei movies blatantly aped aspects of other movies of the day mothra= indiana jones, goji vs king ghidorah=terminator etc. etc.
-the hesei series was full of great ideas with very poor execution
-Godzilla vs Destroyah should have been the best godzilla film in the series, if not of all time (behind the original of course).
-the return of godzilla, godzilla vs biollante, godzilla 2000, and GMK somehow feels as if they exist outside their respective "period"
-Despite all criticisms of goji vs megs... I cant help but love it warts and all, that final battle was dynamic and had significantly more personality, and creativity than many entries prior to or since.
-the new godzilla march heard in the goji vs kiryu series is amazing.
-despite all the "new" ideas of the millenium films , the battle between godzilla and mothra is too recycled.
If push comes to shove I say millenium is better.. the films range from good to excellent. The Hesei series is more uneven and the missed opportunities feel much more significant.
