Godzilla is a very flexible character. Either approach is fine with me. It looks like Pacific Rim is covering the lighter popcorn movie territory and Godzilla will be more serious... which is smart on LP's part since it prevents the films from being too similar. And it seems like Edwards is doing it to stay true to the original 54 film, which is all good by me.

And as mentioned in the LP thread, there are far more "light" Godzilla movies than more grounded ones. Why not mix it up a bit more?

So, no, I'm not in a nerd rage over it like some people... I don't see the point in it. I'm more than happy to have Pacific Rim take the lighter stuff and Godzilla take the darker stuff... I welcome the diversity, unlike a lot of people who seem to think everything has to be the same (see: Avengers vs Dark Knight debates). Like superhero movies, I prefer kaiju films to be different in style/tone from film to film.

I like gritty realistic movies like the dark knigh and colorful fantastic hyper realistic movies like the avengers equally. As long as I get something of quality that is recognizable as the big g then I will be happy. That said though I'd like a more realistic take for the first film

A bit dark/serious is fine and can still be fun--such as in GMK--but I hope it's not too morose and, ideally, even has some good monster battles. :] I thought it was confirmed early on that there'd be another monster, so I hope it's not so similar to the '54 film that all we get is Godzilla leveling cities. And if Godzilla DOES fight another monster, that raises the question of whether the opponent is more or less of a menace than Godzilla himself--or maybe even an equal force that Godzilla faces for territory.

...but let's have it be 1) really Godzilla and 2) really good. Those are the two important things. The rest are just hopes/preferences.

If you've seen Monsters, you know that Mr. Edwards is not afraid of mystical of fantastical creatures. Mothra could fit well into a movie, and could either be explained as a mutation, or by trying to approach it classically.

Damn though, Mothra vs. Godzilla remake would be awesome. It's story is still relevant today.

The Occupy Movement (Which Dark Knight Rises draws some inspiration) shows that at least a segment of the population is fed up with corporatism. People are upset about Citizens United.

A modern retelling of Mothra vs. Godzilla with corporate greed, shady political dealings, hippies protesting the consumerization of life and monsters.

There's some very awesome potential in that idea.

Assuming that they are going to have more kaiju than Godzilla in this film, and assuming it's successful...I imagine they'd stuff a lot more monsters in a second film to up the ante.

If each film is successful enough to warrant a sequel, I imagine a trilogy would go something like...

Film 1: Godzilla vs. some new monster

Film 2: Godzilla vs. multiple monsters (some new, some classic)

Film 3: Godzilla vs. some "uber-kaiju" (maybe new, maybe classic) and dies

I just hope headliner monsters like ghidorah, rodan and gigan etc are merely defeated and not killed. I am sick of monsters being killed so they can't come back in the sequel. Now monsters like Mechagodzilla, Hedorah can be killed and brought back logically. Canon fodder like Kamakiras and Kumonga can also be brought back as well. Its one of the reasons why I didn't like the Heisei films. They kept killing off the fan favorites.
