At the same time this is a r-rated scifi film, I think for what its doing boxoffice wise everyone should be pretty pleased.

From what I've heard personally, a lot of people didn't even know this had anything to do with Alien until the very end. My friend's dad saw it and he had no idea. And when I saw the movie a second time, I went to the bathroom afterwards and heard a big group of 6 or so people talking outside about how much they loved the movie, but they wanna watch it again because they didn't realize it was connected to Alien until the end of the movie.

You'd be surprised how big of a vacuum us nerds live in... There is a percentage of the general public that don't read movie rumors online constantly, wouldn't recognize the name "Weyland" and don't examine the similarities between the trailers for Alien and Prometheus.

My take on Prometheus at this point is that it's an okay film. It has some cool concepts, but so many elements of the film just seem kind of sloppy.

The movie gives us several reasons for why David does the things he does, (Holloway being slightly mean to him saying that he'd do anything to learn more about the Engineers, Weyland telling him to try harder, etc.) but I'm sorry, I still don't buy it. I don't think it's well written. Holloway and Shaw are the two people on board most motivated towards finding and contacting the Engineers. Exposing Holloway to a possibly toxic/contagious substance just seems like the dumbest way to accomplish these goals. For all David knows he could possibly be contaminating the entire ship. I know he's an android and he can do a lot more than a normal human; it just seems a lot more logical and a lot more efficient to try to keep the crew alive.

Also, how is David having a conversation with Weyland if the latter is in cryostasis? There's a difference between observing someone's dreams and conversing with them.

Furthermore, I don't understand why David is such a jerk to Shaw. When did she ever say anything mean to him? Why all the condescending lines like "Seems like your god has abandoned you."

And I'm sorry, the scenes following the alien abortion scene are incredibly jarring. In one scene, they're so concerned about infection that shaw's put into isolation and they send in David to put her CRUCIFIX into a sealed container so that it won't contaminate anything. Then they find out she has an alien in her uterus, she incapacitates two of the scientists over the head with a pipe, has the abortion, and then everyone completely forgets what happened. Suddenly no one is worried about her contaminating anything, the scientists don't show any sign of being injured or pissed off that Shaw bludgeoned them. Oh, and no one shows any reaction to Weyland being alive. To me, it feels like the whole alien baby thing was just there to create false tension that ultimately goes nowhere.

I didn't spend the time to go through this entire thread, but it seems like most of you here liked it - as expected. That's great!

I don't quite understand why anyone would be upset with this movie. The split has started nerd wars all over planet earth. We have been divided in two.

It had all of the elements that a great science fiction should have. I loved the tentacles, and the unexplained vaults of black ooze. Very Lovecraftian. I'm a firm believer that any great sci-fi story or flick should leave the viewer with more questions than answers....

One thing I did not dig was the showing of the xenomorph at the end. I thought that was a little unnecessary. I imagine the producer being like, "Uhh guys? Think we should maybe throw one just for the hell of it? I mean, people are going to be expecting that."

Has modern Hollywood brainwashed audiences into believing all questions should be answered and everything should be shown? The answer is YES. For shame!

Also, has there been a discussion to WHY Del Toro no longer wants to make At the Mountains of Madness because of this movie? I am very disappointed by that comment.

Whew...I just read the last ten pages to get caught up! Sucks not having the internet at home right now.

I love reading everyone's thoughts on this film, I've seen it twice now, and hope to experience it a third this week. I think the mysteries that surround the story are awesome...lets us think and come up with our own conclusions. There's really not THAT much left to the void though, semi-solid conclusions can be drawn based on what was given to us.

Some things I've wondered about, but I don't remember anyone suggesting on here, are:

Why did they want to destroy us? Maybe that was their goal all along. I think of the human race as being just one of many science experiments. And once the experiment has reached it's apex, it's time to clean slate and start over. By leaving behind some "clues" on Earth (and maybe other worlds) as to their origins and a form of "invitation"...once the native dominant species was evolved and intelligent enough to translate the maps and follow them...the Engineers would then know their experiment had reached it's goal. When the explorers would reach the planet, it would be a signal to the military Engineers that it's time to head back to that world to unleash the bio-weapons and then eventually start fresh with something new. That's my take...right or wrong. :D

I also wonder if each of the Engineer military ships had a different form of the alien "goo". David said the ship they found was destined for Earth (a stretch of a coincidence with the first ship they find, but who cares), but what if each of the other (dozens did he say?) ships were destined for separate worlds? Each one with a variation of the bio-weapon best suited for cleansing of that particular world? So what if then the ship carrying the eggs and traditional species variety as seen in Alien films was originally intended for another planet and race all together, yet is the one that humans ended up having contact with the most? There are countless strains of virus and bacteria used (potentially) as bio-weapons in the real world, so what if there are various strains of the xenomorph? I'm probably way off track, but these are fun ideas I've been toying with.

I do like the idea some of you threw out there about how the "goo" was originally developed by studying the traditional xenomorph, and that the ship seen in Alien was more of a scientific cargo than military weapon.

One more thing. Can we assume that the ship Dr. Shaw and David flew away with to find the Engineers home world was also filled with bio-weapons? Can you imagine the kind of welcome they would get with THAT?
