Building a Media Room

Postby jellydonut25 » Fri Jun 01, 2012 11:58 am

I'll post pics and stuff as I undergo the process, but basically I'm planning on building a media room on a bit of a budget. I've always wanted one and though the new house doesn't have one built-in, it has 5 bedrooms and a study, so one of those rooms is getting converted.

Anyway, part of the reason for this thread is not only to share the trials and tribulations (some of which have already started) but also to bounce around ideas, recommendations, etc.

Here's what I have thus far:
The room is 13' long by 12.5' wide. This is a bit on the small side for a media room, but it's what I have to work with and I've already checked and I can get projectors that will work in the space.
There is a crawl-space behind the wall where the projector will be, making my life slightly easier for wiring.
I have gone up into the attic, and it won't be too too difficult to run wiring up there.
Looks a little hard to drop wiring between walls from up in the attic...might be some trial and error there.

Like I said, this is on a budget, so the fewer holes being cut in walls and the less significant the rennovations, the better.

Materials list and budget numbers:
-Surround Sound System: $350 (already under-budget on this as I bought one for $240, including a receiver)
-Blu-Ray Player: $100 (any ideas for good players under $100?)
-Projecter: $1300 (I'm pretty locked in to the Epson Power Lite 8350)
-Speaker wiring/new HDMI Cables: $100
-Speaker mounts: $20
-Window covering/blackout: $40
-Screen Goo paint to build screen: $225
-Other screen materials (framing mat'l, sand paper, etc) - $50
-Paint for the room: $100
-Painting tools (trays, rollers, paint thinner, etc): $50
-Lighting (I want to get 2-4 wall sconces for some low-level lighting): $100
-Furniture (Chaise lounge-sectional, and a large 2-person swivel chair w/ ottoman): $2000
-Fudge factor: ~$500.

TOTAL BUDGET: $5000 (but if I spend that much, I think I might be a dead man)

Any thoughts on that list? Things I might be missing? Suggestions on stuff?

I've been slipping around on Amazon, and I found 100 ft of plenum-rated speaker wire (which I need due to the attic-run), 25ft hdmi cable wall-rated, 5 6ft hdmi cables (to hook blu ray player, xbox, computer, etc into receiver), and 5 omnidirectional speaker mounts all for about $75...
I've got a $40 Best Buy gift card headed my way for buying a washer/dryer which I'd like to use on the Blu-Ray Player (but still would like to keep the base price of the player at or under $100, so I can bring this thing in under budget)

If I snip here, save there, and keep finding deals like 100 ft of speaker wire for $30 and such, I think, God-willing, I can bring this thing in for under $4000, which is where the wife wants it.
Gills.

I can understand that but you aren't really going to benefit from having that large of a screen and sitting that close too it.

It'd be like sitting in the front row at a theater/IMAX unless that's something you like.
